GIVE IT BACK TO HIM!!!!! Seems simple to me. If you don't, you'll end up feeling guilty for ages, and be forever looking over your shoulder for the police, or this guy and/or his mate with a baseball bat or something!

if this is for real, then wtf?
if you see someone drop their phone, or see it on the floor and KNOW who's it is/who's friends with the owner, and you take it regardless, when you know whose it is, and lie about having it, then surely it is actually theft? and therefore you could be in trouble with the police.

He obviously doesn't care whether it's theft or not, mate. I'd have a coupla hefty mates alongside me if i were in your shoes, buddy, when i handed that phone back to the owner, coz i know if i were him i'd thump ya for not telling the truth in the first place. GIVE IT BACK!
