A phone can be traced, and blocked. It could be tracked via the cells (masts) that a phone logs onto so it's approximate location can be made. It can be blocked via it's IMEI number.
If this is re. that E1000, hand it into the police as lost property mate, as I say you'll get it back in a month's time if no one claims it

Nothing happens mate, how are they to know you stole the phone. They will never contact you anyway, but you could always say you bought it off ebay anyway

Probably a fine.... I wouldn't be surprised if I've inadvertently had a stolen phone at some stage when I've bought a phone off Ebay to fix and it turns out to be blocked - I guess I could technically have been done for handling stolen goods....

Do the honest thing and hand it in. Or keep it and take your chances. Jail ain't that bad if you're big and brawny and can take care of yourself. If you're not, take along a jar of Vaseline :o) Just in case, y'know hehehehe

God, Is everyone paranoid here, The cops will never catch you, they have got better things to do than chase someone for a phone thats worth £100 that might have been stolen!

They probably won't track you just for a stolen phone or anything, they'd probably only do that for suspected terrorists or something. Besides, there's a good chance the phone will get blocked in the next few days anyway.
Hand it in to a police station, or even the bus driver of that bus next time you're on it, and if it's still unclaimed after a month (and isn't blocked) you've got yourself a decent phone for free.... and guilt free!
