@tom78999
many thanks for your input re: java. i hate java. had the latest version installed on my laptop (xp sp2) and got the same errors all the time. then tried on another computer (clean install xp sp2) with i guess microsoft java integrated (not on the add/remove programs list anyway). update at least then started to work.....

i hate O2! update was not allowed!

anyone with O2 tried to use the 'recovery mode' update? was thinking of trying it but worried may render phone useless
cake anyone?

@cakepanda

Sorry, recovery mode doesn't work with O2 phones either. And what's more, the conversation I've had with O2 today doesn't help. They told me to take the phone to a service centre. I told them that said they wouldn't be aable to upgrade the phone "until O2 authorises firmware releases". O2 told me that was rubbish.

Hmmm. I've try again tomorrow.

@vegetaleb

Think you can't do that as the update replaces the whole firmware even the IR part ! (phone must be OFF)
And, do you think it is safer than USB ?

Ok, Ive been away for a while and have skimmed through this thread.
I see that Orange customers have been able to use this service to upgrade their firmware.
Does this mean the 'customisations' Orange made are gone?(removal of shortcuts and the stupid icons on main screen).

T-Mobile branded K700i

upgraded my firmware to R2L successfully.

PC running XP Pro, SP2.

uninstalled all Java apps via Add, Remove Programs and installed Java from: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp as previously posted by colmacg01.

first attempts at upgrade were failing, then got a message saying my operator wouldnt allow for this upgrade or words to that effect....then tried again and it worked.

was a bit confusing as to whether the phone should be on or off when performing the upgrade, think the last thing i did was turn it off then switched it on when the Java app said it should be on.

also disabled my firewall during the upgrade.

all phone number entries and mp3's etc remained intact after upgrade...havent yet experienced the longer battery life obviously but the annoying T-Mobile logo's are still all over my phone and it still asks for Phone unlocking code evertime i turn the phone on as well as my pin.

Esato, still no K700i forum?....how sad.

I too can report a successful firmware upgrade. I've gone from R2C to R2L on an Orange branded K700i. Computer is running Windows XP with service pack 2 installed and I used the newer base station, the 25 model I beleive.
Afrer the upgrade the only stumbling block I came across was when accessing "my videos" on the phone, it locked up and became very slow indeed. I used the Sony/Ericsson file manager software to remove the video files from the phone and it now works fine.

i saw this line in the log file:

"17.40.33:313 47 Exception Could not send shutdown request to flash loader homeflash.msconnector.a: Failed to get Ack for package command 20 !!!"

"17.43.58:317 78 Exception Exception homeflash.msconnector.a: Reply result error in waitForCommandReply(). Expected: 0 returned: 3"

i don't know what this means but my phone was upgraded to R2L version. any of you guys also had these lines in your log files after going thru the update? btw at the end of the update process i also got the message "error in communicating with device." i also removed my SIM card before starting the online update.

That branding thing is really a pain in the neck! It's very unfair, good thing no telco here in my country has followed that path otherwise there would be civil unrest by now! Any news when the next fw release would be guys?
