Compiled FAQ for K700 online update service

Complied from SE website and this thread

Relevant thread: Firmware overview, New firmware R2L001
Screenshots of the update process

Q: Where can I do the online update?
A: http://www.sonyericsson.com/updateservice/K700/frameset.htm

Q: What is the current firmware version from this online update service?
A: R2L001

Q: Which phones can use this update currently?
A: It seems to work for all K700 except O2 K700.

Q: Can I choose what software to put into my device?
A: No. The service will automatically identify if your device has operator specific software and make the latest software version approved by your operator available for update

Q: Can the update service be used offline?
A: No. The service must always be started from the Sony Ericsson website.

Q: What is required to run the update service?
A: (1) An internet connected PC. Preferably broadband, but it is also possible to use a modem connection; (2) A DSS-20 or a DSS-25 desk stand installed and connected to your PC; (3) A fully charged battery; (4) At least a PC with a Pentium 133Mhz and 32 MB RAM, or more.

Q: In what OS should I run the update?
A: Windows 98SE, ME, 2000 (SP3 required) or XP (SP1 required). XP with SP2 is ok too, but be careful about the pop-up block and download block…To check what SP you have, start->run, type in “winver”, hit “enter”

Q: What is the difference between DSS-20 and DSS-25? Where can I get them?
A: There is no difference technically between the DSS-20 and DSS-25. You can try getting them from ebay (around 15.99 GBP for DSS-25 and 8.99 GBP for DSS-20)

Q: Why can not the device be updated via Bluetooth or Infrared?
A: The update service updates the entire software, including for instance Bluetooth. This makes it impossible to use Bluetooth or Infrared as media for device software updates

Q: What happens to user data, applications and settings during update?
A: No user content is affected during an update. Someone reported that the short cuts have been changed. Another user reported that the language has been changed.

Q: What happens if the internet connection goes down during the actual update of the device software?
A: This is not a problem. Before the actual update process begins the service makes sure that everything needed is downloaded to the PC.

Q: How long does it take to update a K700?
A: It depends on the circumstances.
Assumption: you have the desk stand with driver installed and at least a 0.5 Mbit internet connection.
Best case:
Downloading the device software: 7 minutes.
The actual update: less than 10 minutes.
Going through the service: 10 minutes.
Altogether: roughly 27 minutes.
Worst case:
Download and install the update service PC-client: 10 minutes.
Downloading the device software: 7 minutes
The actual update of the device software: 18 minutes.
Going through the service: 10 minutes.
Altogether: roughly 45 minutes.

Q: What should I do if an update fails?
A: If the device is operational you should perform the update from the beginning. In the unlikely event that the device is non-operational you should perform the update in recovery mode. If the device is still non-operational it should be handed in at your nearest service location.

Q: What happens if the device accidentally is removed from the desk stand during the actual update of the device software?
A: Most likely, but not necessarily, the device may be non-operational. But do not worry. If the device is operational you should perform the update from the beginning. In the event that the device is non-operational you should perform the update in recovery mode. In the unlikely event that the device is still non-operational it should be handed in at your nearest service location.

Q: What is "recovery mode"?
A: "Recovery mode" offers an opportunity to revive non-operational devices only. The reason why the device is non-operational is not relevant. As long as you have previously tried to use the service you will be able to use recovery mode. When the device is non-operational, the service can not retrieve the CDA-number from the device. Hence, recovery mode can only be used if you have used the service before so the service knows which CDA-number to use for your particular device. Recovery mode works even if the update failed the first time you tried, as long as you got so far that the actual update procedure had started, i.e. when you see the progress indicator on your screen.

If you have questions or answers to questions, you can post them below or msg me. I will then update this thread accordingly.

Nice.

Q. Although your current firmware determines what new firmware is downloaded, can you change the language pack?

You forgot to mention why it isn't possible to use the DCU-11 usb data cable for updating your firmware, until now haven't found an answer to that except that it's not possible, but nobody seems to know why it isn't possible..

I have a question about the DSS-20/25: since it conects also to the power conector of the phone, besides the data conector, can it be used as an (usb) re-charger????

It cant be used as a USB charger as standard. It has been said that it is possible to do this but I dont know how, sorry.
Has anyone noticed the spelling mistake in the thread title? It says "complied" instead of "compiled". Sorry to be picky.

How about using the speaker stand either the css-20 or css-25?

I am under the impression these stands do the same as the dss-20 & dss-25 but have the added advantage of being a speaker phone too.

Please advise, thanks.

@cakepanda

Actually, O2 are pretty much the BEST operator when it comes to leaving the phone alone! My O2 K700 is not externally branded at all, and the only non-changable O2 customisation is an O2 icon in place of the Sony Ericsson link - the top left icon of the main menu.

The customisations of my T610 were even less - you could set it up to look like a completely unbranded phone if you liked.

If you want to see how intrusive customisations can be, look at a Vodaphone brand K700!

By the way, Prospect, as far as I know you can't perform an Online update on Vodaphone branded, as well as O2 branded, K700s.

Mike

Quote "they even have a premium rate support line which is nice for their high paying contract customers "

You can get around this....01349 885040 (national rate), which is included in your free evening and weekend minutes. It does state at the beginning of the call that it is 50p a minute, but shows up on bill as national rate....
