Got my TT5 for P910i this week, too. As close to 5 weeks from order as makes no difference.

Keen not to disrupt the clean lines of my A4Cab I’m pleased that the tiny GPS receiver sits happily on a non-slip mat on the dash without sliding about. As the P910 fits into a neat little recess under the arm rest, quite visible and right next to the cigar lighter, I’m a happy bunny. Sound is very audible unless the radio’s on, then you’d probably need an earpiece.

The system is easy to use and I love the route planning function and route demo.

Product improvements needed? Well, of course:
-Sound through the hands-free (why, oh, why?).
-More flexible audio instructions for those complex junctions, e.g. ‘Take second exit on roundabout then third turning on the left’, and more help getting into lane sooner. 300 yards seems to be the usual warning distance.
-More up to date map (surprise!) e.g. 4 junctions slightly wrong in a 40 mile trip within 50 miles of London. MapView sorts the problem, but I’d prefer to keep my eyes on the road when things get tricky.
-Switching to/from other apps made easier.
-Better documentation (yes, I’m the one who reads it!), e.g. more on using other gps receivers & making/receiving calls while satnaving. I get the impression the documentation is just the general bumph for any TT satnav.
-Quicker address input, I guess there’s a lookup function that slows everything down. Other input is all pretty quick, it seems to me.
-Aylesbury map updated with the Council’s new moving bollards!

User improvements needed?
-Remember to turn P910i silent mode off before expecting voice instruction.
-Sort out in-car phone charger, you need it.

I’m wondering if I should switch from Traffic-i to TomTom Traffic. Traffic-i is quicker and simpler to interpret for traffic speed but TTT has more information. Unfortunately TTT only gives you information on the planned route. Personally I like a bigger picture. Comparing the two systems right now they both report a block on the A3 at Robin Hood Way but Traffic-i reports e.g. slow traffic on the A23 and a block on the A47 between Peterborough and Kings Lynn neither of which I can find on TTT (a rather laborious process, too). Sorry, I’m not going to drive to either places to check who’s right but I suspect Traffic-i is more accurate on the main roads as it uses bridge sensors. I understand TT Traffic information uses ITIS which collects speed and delay information from sensors in major fleet operators' vehicles, amongst other sources. Traffic-i is also more sociable, you can let others know about a problem without having to plan their route for them.
Different strokes etc. but TTT has got some work to do in the trial period to convince me to change.

But hey-ho, nothing is ever perfect and I can safely say TT Mobile 5 on P910i rocks.

And if it keeps performing as it has so far and doesn’t ditch me when I need it most, as so many other systems do, then I can safely say I’m a real fan.

Reply on Twiglet:

- You can not change the audio. It is a hardware issue. Just take increased sound volume voice files. I use them to and they work ok.
- Switching to other apps can be done using the 5-way key. Push it backwards to go out of the app and enter the UI of the phone. You can also use the 5-way scroll key to select options and scroll through the menu. When you have selected an option, pushing the key backwards will also go back in the selecting process.
- The speed of the searching of the addresses is due to the fact that the device is not rather fast. Searching in the database does cost time. But that is due to the device, not the app.
- Why would you make a documentation about connecting another GPS, while you get a TT receiver with the package. That is not quite handy relating marketing.
- Sound issue is something that could not be fixed. You need a special API which is pretty deep. SE was not willing of giving that.

Other points will be addressed to TomTom. I will address those to them.

Thanks for your input, anyone more input?

MR

Thanks for the feedback, MR. Much appreciated.

I’m thinking of installing a gps receiver that uses the car’s aerial, then using the original TT one for biking/walking. (I wasn’t just trying to frighten TT’s marketing department, honest!) I assume any BT gps receiver will work OK. Is that right, do you know?

Yup, that is possible. In the GPS status part of the menu you can choose for thrid party GPS receiver and the Bluetooth connection screen will come up.

Good Question! I see from the TomTom web site that you can download city maps, including the USA. What about travelling between cities?

Is it possible to download other full country maps such as France, Switzerland for the P910i (obviously you need a larger memory card). The web site doesnt seem to offer this.

Also, when is TomTom going to update the website device list to include the Sony Ericsson P910?

Interesting question. According to the helpdesk of R66, you need to buy new software when you buy a new phone (regardless of the operating system it uses). I hope that is not the case when you order TT. I hate to buy new software when the successor aarives next year and I need to spend another € 300 to have the software again!

For me it is one of the main reasons not to buy R66 .

I'm trying to get a confirmation (from a Dutch TT Reseller) that I don't need to buy TT again as long as your new phone uses the same OS.

The new phone will not use the same OS, so you do need to buy new software. That is what will happen anyhow.

If you're right, the software is not upwards compatible and buying a new phone is expensive if you need to buy new software too.

2 more questions:
Did you look at alternatives. i.e. R66?
Do you know a retailer in NL, that has the software on stock (preferably a version with European maps)]

Thnx!

I get this with Route66 when I have other apps running and it runs out of memory..I use SMan to flush all other tasks before running the satnav.

how did you copy the program ??? you can't do the copying on the cradle it has to be done on a good card reader.

I copied the TomTom card onto my pc, then initially i copied the individual folders onto my gb card. After this it would not start at all - got the error message straight away.
Then i copied the entire MSSEMC folder(i.e. the copied TomTom card file) onto my own gb memory card.
I now find that the application will start up and run for a bit as long as you keep it busy i.e.plan routes, navigate, but it still crashes after a few seconds. Otherwise if you leave it, it crashes staright away after TomTom screen.

(I was using a fairly cheap card reader from Ebuyer)
