To everyone with camera problems:

You either have a defective model or you're blocking the sensors when shooting. Your fingers must not stick out from the back of the phone, even one centimeter is enough to screw up the picture. It took me some shots to get used to it but to SE's defence, they do give a leaflet with detailed instructions on how to shoot.

I have to say that's a bit condescending, same as all others who post that the camera isn't being held properly.

People have done a lot of research into this, and the problem affects handsets from the initial batch, through to handsets being delivered today.

Out of the 70 photos I took the previous evening, all requiring flash and taken indoors, about 5 of them were all black with 1% visible, and a further 8 were massively underexposed with about 50% visibility.

Well I did say you might have a defective unit. Did you try taking it back for replacement?

not yet, I'm going to wait for a firmware update first. I'm working on the assumption that as I have 2 k850's, and both of them are showing the same problems, that it's a firmware issue.

It's a total pain in the arse, but I've got the patience to wait and see what happens. If it's not "fit for purpose" within a couple of months, then they can have them both back

Oh dear.. didn't I ask about writing in 72 point bold type to say I wasn't covering the sensor, and following the manual method perfectly?

I realise now I needed to write in 144 point Arial Bold to get the point over; the flash does not fire - or does but is early. The sensor is NEVER covered.

Can't people read that the EXIF data says the flash fired, so it adjusts the ISO/exposure settings to match. If you switched the flash off, it would work better (but you'll get a dark or blurred image instead - but at least not pitch black).

And if the sensor WAS being covered, what would you expect it to do anyway? Would you expect it to allow you to take a picture but mess it up? Would you expect it to flash early or not at all?

I was playing around with the media menu on my phone last night and was wondering if it was maybe a file that was making the phone reboot each and everytime I navigated through the gallery menu, as it always rebooted at the exact same place....well after a trial and error session I can say that I found the offending file and deleted it and guess what, media menu works perfectly with no reboots what so ever and best pic is behaving it self also

The file I deleted was some album art that was in the same folder as the music files, at a guess this confuses the media menu and makes it reboot, maybe with the new firmware update this will be corrected but for me its ok as I never bother with album art and was suprised when I found the file in the music folder.

On the flash front mine appears to be fireing ok on the whole with some nice pics in complete dark, I have had a few though that have come out completly black and the soft keys are sometimes slow in letting you take another pic.

One last thing this is my second K850i and the build quality is much much better than my first... the first had a loose bat compartment and the back squeeked when u sent any text message, my new one is ok in that respect.

Well I think i may have a bigger problem with the phone.
Went to be last night and switched of the phone.
This morning and the phone will not switch back on.
All the phone keyboard comes on and then the SE Logo, then the keyboard comes on and thats it. The keyboard then just flashes all the time.

I had this exact same problem with my first K850i last week Seems to be a spontaneous memory corruption that occurred simply by my turning the handset off and on again after a couple of hours. Had to take it back and exchange under a 28-day faulty exchange (which was no problem at CPW).

Im now on my second K850i and not very happy, when I try to view photos in the media manager the phone reboots and goes black then says searching for network. Same problem on 2 brand new phones so I cant be the only one with this fault. Also I cant use the "best pic" feature as when it takes the photo all I see is a black screen! Will these be corrected by a new firmware release? If so when will it be available? SE shouldnt be allowed to sell phones that dont perform to the stated specification!

A couple of days after I got my replacement K850i (see above) it started doing this. It happened every time I would go into the Photo album through Media, but not through File Manager. Phone would reboot as you describe.

This morning, I did a full backup with PC Suite and then a Master Reset //Reset All. This seems to have solved the problem and restoring the backup has not reintroduced the problem, so I'm happy.

It would seem both this and the issue described above are caused by spontaneous memory corruptions.

I should add I'm using an unlocked handset from CPW on O2.

I've found another bug:

The situation is as following:

I have a k850i unbranded using a Sandisk 6GB MicroSD card.
All went well untill I did the following:

For usage with the Mgmaps application, I needed to make maps.
Now, these maps are divided in miniature parts...
In my case: 186MB, 15.433 files.

When these files were copied to the memory stick, the phone just kept locking up!
It refused to go past the SE-startup logo...
When the memory stick was taken out, the phone functioned well.
Also, when entering the memory stick when the phone was turned on, it froze.. I then pressed some D-pad buttons to check responsiveness, and nothing, it just froze... But when I took the memory stick back out, the phone would do all the movements I made using the D-pad very rapidly...

I also did a master reset, no solution...

The only solution that solved my problem... => Removed the 15.433 files...

All goes well now...

So I think the bug is; The SE K850i is unable to handle a large amount of files on the MS.

Over the weekend, now I'm using a T650i again, I've been using the Bluetooth Watch (150) and the DS970 headphones. As I thought, there's no problem with using both - and audio is streamed smoothly, and instantly (no delay between tracks).

On the K850i, if you have both in use at the same time, the audio starts straight away but stutters terribly for about 5 seconds. At this point, it's communicating with the watch (to show track ID).

I noticed today, that my recently purchased (yes, i was stupid) Nokia BH-501 Bluetooth stereo headset doesn't quite work properly with K850i.

1. None of the music functions work (No play/pause, rewind, skip track), but volume. And even that doesn't use SE UI, but Nokias own amplifier.
2. When connecting, it randomly breaks off the connection, or when it has been in use for a while and you turn it off, the headset icon is still displayed on K850i and you have to restart the phone to get rid of it, or if you want any other headset (even a wired one) to work.
3. As mentioned in 2. The EQ freaks out after using BH-501. When using a wired headset after that the sound is horrible, and none of the EQ settings work. Phone boot is required.
4. At the menu where you select your ringtone and if you play the tune in that menu phone tries to connect to Nokia BH-501, and tells that it is connected even though it is not even on. This happens almost on every tune you try to play. Though they play through K850i speaker.

Lot of bugs in that one. So i'd suggest you REALLY don't go for Nokia headset. Hope we'll get the FW updated soon...

Hi I just got a problem with my K850. It's been working perfectly for 2 weeks now but suddenly I can't access games or applications. I just get the message "operation failed".

I also had some problems with the Media Manager, but that was corrected with a reset. The game/application problem however will not fix itself...

From searching I found some others with the same problem http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=157722 and it also seemed to be a common problem on K88 judging from all the topics.

I've tried the master reset 2 times but that doesn't seem to work.

Is there a way to fix it? Do I have to re-flash it?

I'm starting to get really frustrated. I've had this phone for 3 weeks now. The firmware is still shite. Not even an update to sort out the major issues such as the camera being awful. If there isn't a new firmware out soon I'm going back to the K810i.

How long till we can expect a new firmware?
IIRC it took them almost 2months for k800/k750 (not sure anymore).. but then again there werent as many (serieus) bugs as with the k850
