Android phone? Could save the day maybe.

Then some questions popped up in my head:

*Is it using nexperia 210mhz?
*Multitouch?
*Resolution on screen?
*When is it going to be announced, and what price?

Anyone have the slightest clue?

The market for smartphones is really up in the air at the moment.

With the iPhone you get a pretty good device, slick, integrated interface and something that is easy to use, easy to install applications on and tightly controlled to provide consistency for the end user.
This also has its own problems:

- Only available on certain networks/operators
- Unable to unlock with any simplicity
- Below spec hardware in some areas (camera for example)
- Restricted to applications purchased from the iTunes store
- Restrictions on what audio and video formats that can be played
- No changeable battery, etc...

The Windows mobile devices have suffered random quality issues and you either love them or hate them. They are definitely not for the average user which causes problems for purchasers and vendors.
Of course the iPhone has forced vendors to up their game, hence the flux of new devices with fancy touch screen interfaces. It's a good start but Windows is still underneath.
That's good and bad:

+ A large hackers community exists, so customising these devices is possible and there are a lot of different customisations to choose from
- Hacking requires experience and is not for the faint hearted
+ Changeable batteries
+ A large software base of just about any application you could ask for
- Windows reliability
- Windows bloatware
+ You can play just about any audio or video format out there

With Symbian what should have been many years ago never quite got there, especially with the Sony Ericsson devices. Yes Symbian devices are big in the market place but that's mostly down to Nokia and now anyone interested in this segment is waiting to see what the Symbian Foundation brings.

The Android platform seems to have potential - more open than the relatively closed and tightly controller iPhone environment, but this also introduces the problem of too much choice ... too many flavours and inconsistencies.

When you think of the Chinese expression - "May you live in interesting times" it's no wonder this can be thought of as a blessing and a curse

Android is the best thing that has happened this year so far. It will make alot of business sence for SE to join the OHA and release and android phone. That would surely boost their smarphone sales which has nose dived in recent months.

I think having so many smartphone OS's, each with their own loyal fanbase, some merging, others copying one another, some have features missing in others and vice versa, so all in all there is much uncertainty as to the future growth of each OS. So, the best thing SE could do would be to capitalize somewhat in each market. That is, have a high end Xperia handset for each prominent OS, and then go from there. \\Of course, they could then develop on the favoured OS. That would depend on which is easiest to use, which is easiest to write code for, which is better looking, which is generally popular etc. Such a plan would make sense, because UIQ is a lost cause now, and that once loyal fanbase will have to choose a new OS, and SE should not lose them to growing operating systems over which it has no control (currently that's OS X mobile, Symbian S60 and the soon to be Google Android). S60 and Android devices should therefore be developed to draw a broader fanbase to SE. IMO Android is the way to go, since it can do everything S60 can do, but it is touchscreen as standard. And what better way to test the waters than with high end products which atract full spec seeking consumers, the type who enjoy high levels of customisation and new experiences in general?

Why r u all crazy about android?? U know that programs written for it r JAVA which is SLOW and needs more CPU power and RAM compared to native code. AFAIK in the Android SDK, programs are not compiled AOT.

And we know Google is about ADVERTISEMENT which is just another word for BLOATWARE so expect a lot of POP-UPS!

If you think WM is bloated, then see it in full force with Android!
