It seems strange to us westerners, but it happens quite a lot in the Pakistan/India/Sri Lanka region of the world
I have a very good male friend in Goa called 'Bunty', he found it unfathomable that Bunty is predominantley a female name in the UK!
Sometimes, it's just nicknames or shortened forms of a name. I met quite a few people in India who's chosen name betrayed their gender!
Having said that, my name is 'Jamie' which, as we all know, can be a girl's name as well!
