I rang up O2 this morning to ask about upgrading my current K700 handset to a K750, which I am able to do on June 2nd (just one more week!!) - 11 months into my contract.
There were a couple of things that suprised me.
1. I have been on a £22.50pm tariff (50 mins, 500 texts) for the last 11 months. I noticed that the price subsequently dropped down to £19pm, but I thought I would have to wait until I renewed my contract before changing the tariff. Apparently not - the lady just changed it from £22.50pm to an identical £19pm tariff!! I wish I had known about that when the price was first brought down!!
2. I asked how much it would cost to upgrade to a K750. I was told, after they looked at my usage level, that it would be £79.99. When I pointed out that I could just get a new contract online and pay £49.99 for the phone the lady said "we could come to some sort of arrangement" when the time came to upgrade.
I realise that my phone bills are not very large, but I am not going to pay £30 more to upgrade rather than start a new contract!

1. They are a business and they're not exactly going to inform you that you can get the same deal with them for less money. That would be bad business practice.
2. This has been the norm for some time and it is only recently it is starting to change. I left Orange for O2 because of this two years ago. I wanted to upgrade to an E700 but they wanted a £100 upgrade fee even though my usage was good (about £35-£40 a month) and I had had the same phone for two years and had been with them for nearly six years. However, they were offering the E700 on my tariff to new customers for nothing so I said I was going to take my PAC number and leave if they didn't give me the upgrade for free. They refused. I left. If the same thing happened now I would get it for free which shows the networks have finally realised keeping their current customers is just as if not more important as attracting new ones. |

Went into local o2 shop monday, could'nt upgrade as I'm still in contract till end of August.
Took out a new contract and got the k750i free.
Phoned up o2 customer services today to request PAC code and to buy myself out of contract. Explained about new contract etc, and the kindly told me to return the phone and cancel, charged me £48 to buy myself out of contract, upgraded me free, and still got the double text and mins on a new 12 month contract keeping my number. Will recieve phone thursday next week.Just have to make sure I don't scratch the one I have till then
WELL HAPPY

Put my name on a waiting list at the O2 shop in town on Monday, got call yesterday morning, went to the shop yesterday evening and upgraded my phone. My current contract was due to expire on the 10th of June. Got the phone for free, but on the same scheme as kinc.
Now O2 has this bloody special on for the back holiday where they chuck in a free bluetooth headset...
