jojo if you agree with us, then why do you want to see garbage go? No more login-logout, no more m&m advice, no more pictures in your head, no more, no more, no more.

I'd like to hear the opinions of others, especially those 500+ posters

I agree completely with kim.
If you dont want to see garbage on the forum, the garbage forum was made for this so you dont have to browse through it if you dont want to see it...do it because obviously your not.
Garbage forum is named wrong because we dont talk complete garbage there we talk about anything but its not garbage, they are usually proper conversations

I have no problem with Garbage threads even though I don't recall ever posting in them!
I hover over the general & P900 forums. But, if Garbage is effecting the viability, management, efficiency of the Esato system then maybe some limits need to be impossed. |

perhaps just a little reminder at this point that the garbage forum was not made for people to post garbage. It was put there for moderators to move threads that had gone way off topic or for threads which members should "read at their own risk" or for various other reasons.
Indeed laffen even set it up so that members could not create threads there via the web interface but people have found ways around that restriction and the loopholes have not been closed as yet
I can only repeat that there is no harm in some fun on Esato but when people just sit there thinking up any old stuff to create in garbage that when I disagree as it does lower the quality overall and quite often some of that overflows into threads where people are trying to solve problems etc taking that thread off topic. I've lost count of how many threads I have had to get back on topic because of this.
I'm sorry but I don't think my mind will be changed on this topic

Just like your local neighborhood. You do not want too much garbage in your community. Keep it at a minimum. I enjoy reading most of these posts but some are straight GARBAGE to the point that it's useless to read. I joined Esato back in 02 and really seen a big change in regards to this. Garbage was hardly an issue then. It was mostly tech stuff / settings / themes and reviews. Now you have some people come in, open a few threads leave a few posts, never to return. That's GARBAGE!!! |

I happen to think that a large sense of the community here comes from the garbage or mobile phone free zone. If it weren't for that section of the forum it would be harder to decipher the character of some of the members here. Only so much personal interaction can come from answering people's questions about a phone.
I came to Esato when I was looking for a few answers with regards to my old T616. But soon enough I got those answers and moved on to reading other things around the site. If it weren't for some of the other forums I don't think we would have nearly as many long term members.
This could turn into a community with high turn around. Show up, ask questions, get answers, never come back. |

My point exactly. Idont understand the need to demolish the garbage threads, imo they do more good than harm. Maybe we should have a poll on it? |

*sigh* once again I can only repeat that I am not suggesting "demolishing", removing, incinerating, getting rid of, or in any other way not having garbage threads.
All I am suggesting is that there should be quite alot less of the absolute nonesense that we get there, thats all.
Many of the threads there are fun, helpful, friendly etc and I don't believe I have commented otherwise and I too would miss them if they were gone
What I am surprised about is where are all the people who PM from time to time asking why the moderators are not reducing the garbage? why are they now not posting in this thread?

Yeah i get what you are saying, but as you say, where are all those people now? Seems to me theres more of a voice for leaving things be than for tinkering with anything. You have stated yourself that bandwidth isnt an issue, so why risk stirring up possible contentions?

@masseur I agree that there is quite a bit of absolute nonesense that goes on in the garbage forum. There are quite a few threads there that I think are just a huge waste of space. It does have a "read at your own risk" warning though. Many people just stay away from it.
As a mod I am sure the garbage threads add to your frustration, but many people like them. If moderating them becomes an issue, there are several people here that would gladly help out. |

I don't understand the reason why we can't have a general 'chat' thread or jsut a thread about nonsense in the Garbage Forum--after all the thread with the most posts in esato is the UK thread, with ~32000 posts having nothing to do with mobile phones.
I mean, if you read the Garbage threads they read very similarly to the Regional Threads but perhaps with a bit more humor involved.

@kim as i see, as long it doesnt disturb laffen and there is free space for it on the server, u and the others should keep on and compost all the posts!

Do I hear my name being mentioned? I only just saw this thread today, hence why I haven't commented before.
What I don't understand is why there is a change in the 'party line'. I seem to recall myself and a few other members making very similar points to masseur's not all that long ago and not being taken all that seriously. I happen to agree with you, masseur, that there is too much rubbish of late.
I don't think we should get rid of the Rubbish Forum entirely of course, but I do agree that tosh levels have been on the rise lately. The problem, as I see it, isn't that there are too many Rubbish threads, rather there are too many unfunny and/or just plain stupid Rubbish threads being created. Many of the threads in the Rubbish Forum are very funny and various members contribute to them, including moderators, but the boring ones seem to be on the rise; it's like an Esato version of the Greenhouse Effect!
Perhaps the answer is to have a Rubbish Forum moderator, someone who can monitor the Rubbish Forums exclusively. Such a post might also allow laffen to give members the ability to create new threads, directly, in the Rubbish Forum. Another option is to have a complete overhaul of Esato, why not merge the Mobile Free and Rubbish forums into one; I don't really see the need for two seperate forums for what essentially comes down to the same purpose?
What I often see are threads asking a question, which has already been asked and answered, and which then goes off topic and degenerates into complete nonsense. It might be an idea to look at this issue as a way of reducing tosh levels too.

there's a distinct difference between the garbage and mobile phone free zone.
I do think that the actual 'nonsense threads' like a thread where people type in a letter of the alphabet or just type in "asjfhbaskjfasjkf" serve no purpose.
But threads that people actually post in -- mince and meth's, what is this song?, pictures in my head, etc. are actually entertaining and add to the whole communnity atmosphere of esato.
sorry if im not coherent as i just woke up |
