you really have to admire these guys !!

I mean after you break a powerbook or some other expensive gadget i dont think anyone would be in a mood to post it on the net.

i would rather keep it to myself rather than letting the world know how clumsy i am.

Hey maybe we could start SPEG - Society for Protection of Expensive Gadgets. Everybody's starting their own societies nowadays , might as well join in.

Victim:
Betty from Kanagawa Prefecture

Scene of Accident:
Local Road

Broken Item:
Apple Computer iPod

Details of Accident:
I'd finished my crappy part-time job and, feeling quite relieved, was on the way home on my scooter. The iPod was in my bag and secured to the tandem seat with a net. While I was weaving in and out of traffic, there was this strange sound from behind..?! I turned around to see what is was and there was my iPod tumbling down the road.

I slammed on the brakes and quickly went to retrieve it but it was already too late - a car coming from behind ran over it@.....

Damage Amount:
The next day, I checked Apple Computer's website and it looks like the repair will cost about 28,000 yen. Maybe I'll just buy an iPod Mini .....

More from the Contributor:
At the time I bought my iPod, not many accessories (cases etc) for the 4th generation iPod had been released so I just used it without putting it inside a case - I think that contributed to the damage. Well, whichever way you like at it, being run-over by a car is pretty serious (laughs). I was surprised at the level of damage though, regardless of whether it was run-over or not. I bought it soon after they went on sale and had only been using it for about two months ....

THE CRASH: NTT DoCoMo F505i

This bicyclist got hit by a car, and his phone got caught between him and the ground. Ouch.

Victim:
Stein256 of Kanagawa Prefecture

Scene of Accident:
On my bike

Broken Item:
NTT DoCoMo F505i

Details of Accident:
I was hit by a car coming out of a parking lot, while on the way to go shopping by bike. The other party wasn't watching where they were going. When I was hit, the cell phone that was in my right breast pocket got caught between my body and the ground. After the medical treatment was over, I went to make a call, and noticed that the screen was broken.

More from the Contributor:
The other party fully compensated me, and I had the phone's data backed up onto the memory card.

More from the Contributor:
There's really no financial problem because I was compensated, but since the specifications are the same, I changed to the F506i. I was thinking about changing to FOMA with this winter's bonus, but beause I changed now, changing again so quickly would cause the equipment cost to go up. I think I'll wait another 6 months.

I read on engadget.com somewhere, that someone dropped their iPod in a fire, his friend kicked it out, but it was all 'melty'.

It powered on, could sync, but couldn't play music, as the 3.5mm socket was warped!

Here's a DDI Pocket phone being stepped on. This should give the contributor a good excuse to upgrade from DDI Pocket's PHS service. It's just so...1992.

Victim:
Ochoppe of Tokyo

Scene of Accident:
Japanese-style room in my house

Broken Item:
DDI Pocket H-SA2001V

Details of Accident:
I had put my H-SA3001V on top of some textbooks that I had scattered on top of my tatami mats, and since my room was pitch black, I didn't realize this and stepped right on it. I was about to slip and fall, but somehow I managed to stand again and was fine. However, under the weight of this large 70kg build I have, my cell phone was not fine. As you can see, the hinge got twisted.

Damage Amount:
Since I can use the "Repair Assist Service," looks like it'll be taken care of at 2,000 yen.

More from the Contributor:
I think the 2,000 yen repair cost is pocket change when compared to some of the repair costs coming from other contributors, but as I'm a high school student, I can't come up with the money that quickly. Maybe if I set aside my lunch money for next week I can afford it...
But anyway, until then, it can still make calls and do e-mail. I'll just reinforce it with some tape and I'll be good to go.

DDI Pocket RZ-J700

Victim:
Teacher Adachi from Tokyo

Scene of Accident:
My house

Broken Item:
DDI Pocket RZ-J700

Details of Accident:
This summer, I had left my veranda open when going to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, my room was a tad messed up, and I couldn't find my wife's cell phone. "Did I get robbed," I thought. When I tried calling it, I heard the ringer coming from a kennel on the veranda...

Damage Amount:
It had been all of half a year since I changed phones last, and I was loaned a replacement until 10 months come around - the H-SA3001. Repair costs are 0 yen.

More from the Contributor:
Rover must have been teething. There are deep fang marks on the shell, and the screen had been broken from the back while closed. The ten-key was sticky with saliva so that I couldn't use it, but it could still receive calls. But one thing I still don't understand is why a dog would take only a cell phone to their house (kennel).

Victim:
Mr. Bozumi of Tokyo

Scene of Accident:
Parking lot at work where large trucks enter and leave often

Broken Item:
Vodafone V301SH

Details of Accident:
4 ton trucks enter and leave often, because they bring in heavy materials to us; when I was directing the trucks as to where to go, my phone dropped out of my pocket -- and then there was a 4 ton truck carrying machines. It was runover by a total of four tires from front to back, and all that remains are the mangled parts as shown in the photograph above.

Damage Amount:
I'm changing phones to a V401SH, and the company will be taking care of it as a "work-related accident."

More from the Contributor:
Damn, the tires of 4 ton trucks certainly don't support the 4 tons gallantly. Be careful of leaning over when you have something in your chest pocket. This was a moment where I felt the 4 tons.

Victim:
Akira of Osaka

Scene of Accident:
A monthly parking lot near my house (not asphalt, but gravel)

Broken Item:
NTT DoCoMo N503i

Details of Accident:
On a rainy day, just like any other, I noticed that my phone was missing while in my car on my way to work. "Shit! I forgot it at home!" I thought, but since I was running late, I just went went on ahead to work without it.

When I got home past 9 PM or so, my phone wasn't there either. Why? I searched about the entirety of my house, but still couldn't find it.

The next day, when I went to the parking lot to go to work, I discovered some squashed, bluish plastic! The display was also completely hosed, because of the gravel spread out in the parking lot. Damn, and this was my N503i that accompanied me for so many years...

Damage Amount:
Changing to a FOMA contract costed 12,000 yen (including office handling charges)

More from the Contributor:
Earlier, I had changed phones (version up) from the N503i to the F504iS. But, after a month, I dropped the ***** in a toilet. I then returned to the N503i, and intended to not change phones again until the thing broke. Because the phone was completely broken, I helplessly changed to a FOMA contract.

Though the damages were over 10,000 yen, I'm just going to take this as though I shelled out 10,000 for a digital camera. The N503i is a total loss. It wouldn't even power up, and the memory and such was completely gone.

It's a shame, too, because it was my N503i...there aren't many people these days using phones without cameras (or displays on the back).

Victim:
inter of Kagoshima Prefecture

Scene of Accident:
A certain prefectural road in Kagoshima Prefecture

Broken Item:
au W21T

Details of Accident:
I put my phone in a pocket of my coat that I generally don't put it in, and got on the back of my bike and off I went. When I arrived at my destination, my phone was gone!? I searched and searched the road that I came back on, and found the sweets-bag-like yellow colored wreckage you see above in an intersection.

Damage Costs:
Getting a new handset costed me around 18,000 yen

More from the Contributor:
Don't give me that "well it's a good thing you didn't die" crap!! Aah, I think I just want to enjoy the small period of time without a mobile phone in my life.
