THE CRASH! is a feature offered o要 Keitai Watch o要 a weekly basis, where users who have somehow destroyed their phones send in pictures along with short descriptions of how it happened.

Victim:
Mr. Sakaguchi from Osaka

Scene of Accident:
Ariake North Temporary Parking Lot (Tokyo)

Broken Item:
NTT DoCoMo's N900iS

Details of Accident:
When coming home from the comic market of Japan's biggest otaku event, I pulled into a parking lot to take a call from a friend - whether I put the phone o要 top of the car or o要 top of the stuff I had in the trunk when I was through with the call, I don't know - but I forgot my phone and started my car. When I realized this and went back to get the phone, I accidentally ran over the phone, which had been thrown in the gravel. When I recovered the phone, I borrowed a friend's and called it; hearing that sickly ringer sound filled me with sorrow.

Damage Amount:
39,690 yen. Though the sound would play when I turned the power o要, as you can see, since the phone was more or less a total loss it was considered unrepairable. Since I had just changed to this phone from the P504i in July, it would have costed me a lot more, but it came to this price after the "oh ***** I dropped my phone in water" discount.

More From the Contributor:
Having my phone book data backed up o要 my computer certainly helped here. Because the data could not be read from the phone, my bookmarks won't be back. This was right around when I was thinking "I should buy a neckstrap." I thought this would be good proof to show to some of my companions, so I took pictures - this ought to make the blood of some of those Osaka actors boil (lol).

This week's THE CRASH features some poor bastard who dropped his brand spankin' new PowerBook G4 within 12 hours of purchasing it. Sucks.

Victim:
Mr. Real Stupid Man from Shiga Prefecture.

Scene of Accident:
At my part time job

Broken Item:
Apple Computer PowerBook G4

Details of Accident:
12 hours after buying it at the Apple Store, the bag I had the PowerBook in was supposed to be o要 a shelf, but somehow ended up o要 the floor....I was suprised, and when I checked it, the inside of the computer could be seen due to the bending of the base of the chassis being bent.

Damage Amount:
I just sent it in for repairs, so I don't know yet.

More From the Contributor:
Well, I had meant to be get two hard cases for this thing, but even before the end of o要e day... It would suck if they can't get it repaired by the time I have to do my presentation for class (oh shit). I was happy to learn that besides the bending of the case, there was no other damage. It would be nice if the warranty would cover this.

I one time met a guy who dropped his pc, because this way he could buy a new one. Why did het drop it?
He was too scared to ask his wife for a new one. She would say: "you don't need a new pc, this one is only 3 years old and still working fine!"
Everything was ugly, but your beautiful face.

Canon's WordTank line is the most popular Japanese/English dictionaries used by people of my generation.

Victim:
Mr. "Raising" from Kanagawa Prefecture

Broken Item:
Canon wordtank C30

Details of Accident:
Trying to keep my college exams at bey for another half year, my long days of prep school went o要 - but my schedule was more or less free, so the dictionary must have fallen o要 the floor...when I noticed, the dictionary was underneath a pile of thick college work and textbooks.

Apparently after that, whether it was me of my family, someone stepped o要 that pile of stuff - the details are unknown. What I do know, however, is that when I moved the pile I was shocked; my "eyes turned white."

Damage Amount:
When I asked the service center, they told me an exchange for a new product would be 12,800 yen + tax. It's a shame that the LCD wasn't covered by the warranty, and even at the price nearly enough to purchase a new dictionary, I went ahead and paid the 12,800 yen + tax for the exchange fee.

More From the Contributor:
Being an exam-student and not having a dictionary is enough to be painful. I am somewhat happy because I haven't gotten much "spritual damage" as a result of its breaking, because I purchased it for a comparatively low price - but the 13,000 yen I ended up having to pay was quite painful. The power would turn o要, but the o要ly part of the LCD that would actually display something was a 1cm square in the upper right. I couldn't tell what the screen was displaying at all. Since this is my own fault, it's easy to understand what happened. That being said, this is hard o要 a student who pays 10,000s for schooling. I had always thought that a dictionary would be useless if I couldn't take it out of my bag and use it immediately, so I used it without a case, but this incident has clarified the importance of having o要e for me.

It's a shame to see such a beautiful piece of equipment be ruined. Perhaps even worse is how the guy is just going to pitch it! Seriously, he could at least donate the working parts to science or something. I'm sure the LCD is worth a couple bucks to someone.

Victim:
NAO from Kanagawa Prefecture

Scene of Accident:
Desk at work

Broken Item:
Sony Vaio PCG-U1

Details of Accident:
This actually belongs my co-worker, whose desk is next to mine. This co-worker often spills drinks he puts o要 his desk - and this time around, he spilled coffee next beside his Vaio U. I told him "you should turn it off and send it for repairs," but he didn't listen. After leaving it alone for a day, he said he was able to use it - so he just continued to use it after that as if nothing had happened. But a month later, he spilled again. And then the machine didn't work anymore.

Damage Amount:
According to the estimate, a motherboard replacement would supposedly cost more than 150,000 yen, so he cancelled it.

More From the Contributor:
Because it's just going to be thrown away, I thought I'd submit it (to "THE CRASH!") disassembled. It's a bit hard to understand from the picture, but there's a couple pins o要 the motherboard's IC pins that are corroded. That's why I told him "you should send it in for repairs"....

Crying shame, that! As you say, that can easily be cannibalised for spares! I've just done it today with a T68i, taken bits off a dead one to fix another one.

Or just get a couple of those pins new, I'm sure a service centre wouldn't charge that bloke much.

Want to know what happens to a phone when it gets runover by no less than three cars?

It still works.

Gripping story inside.

Victim:
Mr. Ishida of Kyoto

Scene of Accident:
Pedestrian Crossing next to JR Osaka Station

Broken Item:
NTT DoCoMo Paldio 642S

Details of Accident:
I was o要 the way home after eating out with a friend, and while crossing at the pedestrian crosswalk, a young girl called out to me, "you dropped your phone?" Sure enough, I turn around, and there is my phone in the road. The signal had already changed; I looked o要 with dozens of others as I witnessed my phone break as it was run over by three cars in the 90 seconds it took for the signal to change again.

Damage Amount:
When looking over the phone when I got home, the body itself was quite beat up. Yet there were no problems with the backlight, receiving calls, or what I was most concerned about, the ability to get my phone book data out of it. o要e of my friends gave me his "Paldio 633S" that he had retired, and there don't appear to be any obstacles keeping me from putting it into practical use again.

More From the Contributor:
While of course it's a shame about the phone itself, I was extremely saddened because of the damage to my "Glow Ring" strap that I had directly imported from England. I would now like to take the opportunity to thank both the girl who called out to me while crossing the street, and the two dudes behind me who said "that ***** sucks man."

THE CRASH: iRiver iHP-140

Victim:
Mr. KAWA of Kanagawa Prefecture

Scene of Accident:
My house (maybe)

Broken Item:
iRiver iHP-140

Details of Accident:
This happened o要 the day we have a drinking party for my workplace. I went to the party wearing my iHP-140 attached to my belt at the hip as I always do (a cover is included for attaching it to your belt). Although you normally get pretty woozy when you drink, I had an extremely bad premonition about going to a drinking party with a mobile device attached to my belt.

The fun at the drinking party had more or less come to a close, so I went o要 my way to going home. Then, I just changed and went to sleep. ....or at least that's what I remember when I woke up in the morning. But, when I looked at my iHP-140 when going to work, there was some weird pattern o要 the LCD!! It took me no time to realize that it had been damaged.

When going back through what happened after I left work, I had some vague memories of taking a nasty spill when I got home that night. So it seems like it happened right then. A box of tissue paper (Kleenex) got smushed right where I fell.

While I had put it in the protective cover to prevent damage, and it might be a little hard to see from the pictures, but it appears that something sharp went right through the cover and into the LCD screen. So, it looks like the cause would have been me falling, but to this day I'm not entirely sure what happened.

Damage Amount:
I think normally, you would buy another o要e, but:
-There is was effect to audio playback
-Display of MP3 files and such is o要 the included remote controller's LCD
For these two reasons, I intend to keep o要 using it as-is.

More From the Contributor:
Mobile devices are strictly prohibited when you're wasted! I was forced to understand this by having it driven deeply into my mind. But for some reason, my cell phone (F900i) also attached to the belt is fine. Cellular phones have a long history, which because of the strength testing alone, makes them less susceptible to damage.

Here's a rather unfortunate crash I've found on Ebay - A car-100 that's had a tragic crash involving someone's size 14 foot here!
