32MB DDR in phones |

I don't see why mobile phones could not need DDR RAM in a year or two. Today's PDAs are running 624MHz RISC processors. Why not let them read and write memory at full speed?

Many run @ 800! wel, i think this is 2 begin competition with mbile gaming, which is growin in pda like devices & startin in phones.

Yeah, itll take time.ddr has to go a long way,and did some1 see a news that samsung has chosen nVIDIA go force 2100 or something like that as gpu in future phones.i wonder what those gpu's use

Well DDR RAM will only really make a difference when the phones have 1 ghz CISC processors. DDR Ram is used to prevent CPU starvation and that issue is simply not relevant yet. A RISC processor does usually not need the same amount of data to keep up simply because it has a higher IPC. It need a higher clock before starvation becomes a problem.
So believe me! No DDR RAM i phone within the next 12 months! It would make NO DIFFERENCE!!!!! |

Why, why, whyyyyyyyyyyyyy??????????
Would you build super highways for a bicycle??
The CPU is reading and writing AT FULL SPEED. It simply isn't faster yet. The phones need a much larger CPU before starvation occurs!!! ( and a f****** big battery to power it). |

Well i dont know... The article was really amazing, and it was mention that ddr ram will 100% be in phones in twelve months

I can't simply find one english article (or Danish for that matter) that states something like that.
The writer must have been carried away, it happens alot for the danish magazines (because they are stupid and people don't bitch to much because there are to few danes that care) so why not in this case. |

Are you kidding???
Why would we need fast memory for gaming in a mobile? Give me just one TECHNICAL reason instead of this amateurs opinion!
3D gaming on your computer needs fast memory to acces the Z-buffer and textures. This was not a problem with something like the PlayStation because it did not use very high-res textures, the bottleneck was in the GPU's abillity to produce polygons.
The same rutine will happen on phones. First we get a powerfull GPU, and much much higher resolution before WE EVEN THINK ABOUT getting faster memory access. YOU DON'T INCREASE THE SPEED OF MEMORY IF ISN'T NEEDED!!!!!!!!!!!
You're phone won't become a PS2 within the next 12 months....do you really believe that????????????

ok...you are right in some respects, but this is for all mobile stuff!
They need to compete with the 3D gaming od the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP!
The PSP has graphics inbetween the PS and PS2!!!
and the DS supports 2 screens of 3D graphics!
If you think about it, I think this chip will be a big feature of PDAs in late 2004 to 2006 or so!
(most likely, these will be included in 2005 PDAs, then slowly moved on to cell phones towards 2006!)

Why not. We all know that phones will get faster. Look at history. In 1986 Bill Gates said somthing like, all memory we will need in computers are 640 kb. He was werry wrong then.

Did I say that we won't be getting DDR RAM in phones?? We will - But not in 12 months. Besides the PSP & Nintendo DS won't be realesed within twelwe months.
Besides our phones will NOT be able to compete with these two. They are much larger than phones (PSP is 260 grams) and has one dedicated feature. The PSP uses 1.8 Gb-discs for games. Are you saying that phones will leap directly from small stupid 64Kb-javagames up till 1.8 GB PS2-lookalikes??? And why on earth would a SE phone compete with the SONY (yes, SONY) PSP? Look how they cribbled the MP3 player on K700....coincidence?? No, Sony don't want it to compete with their own products.
The phones will EVOVLE. First we will see more 3D-games. Then more polygons will be added and maybe in a 18 months from now we will se PSOne like graphics. In 6 years maybe some phones will have PSP like graphics and then MAYBE we will need the DDR-RAM (BTW PS2 don't use DDR-RAM neither does the PSP). |

@Trentors:
No offence, but you seem to have very strong opinions based on pure personal speculation...

No i don't think so.
I base my opinions on how things have gone so far and how things go usually go with advanced computing/mobile phones. Moore's law IS still present you know.
All arguments you made have being sunk. Your phone won't become a PS2 within twelve months. We have 64k JAVA-games now, capable of giving us SNES-like games, 12 months ago we still had JAVA-games but the games looked more like a Commodore 64.
Next step will be Playstation, Nintendo 64 like games. These consoles did not use DDR-RAM. It was not needed - Pure logic.
As I said : The sole purpose of FAST RAM in 3D-graphics is to acces the Z-buffer and textures (yes I AM THE ONLY ONE using technical terms in this thread....I wonder why). The Nintendo 64 and PSOne had games that was minimum 8-16 megabytes in size and therefore used much larger textures than say Super Real Tennis. These consoles could have used faster RAM and if games get around that size then our phones will need it to. But I can't really imagine downloading 8 mb games, through my GPRS service this time next year! It is simply not very likely.
This whole thing comes from a local mobil magazine! You WILL NOT find anyone stating that within 12 months we will have DDR in our phones, anywhere. Show me just one serious link!
Jesus, I can't believe you can be that ignorant! |
