@folling: that's ok. it seems we're both after the same sort of thing.
@merovingian: thanks for the tip. unfortunately the ixus 400 is no longer available in australia, and has recently been replaced by the 430 (and still with the outdated movie mode  ). since it's still pretty new down under, the price is just a bit out of my league because i still have to buy memory and a few other odds and ends.
