wildmurphy, I'm guessing you're not a fan of Radiohead either.

like so many bands, radiohead were much better early in their career. coldplay, although good, is over-rated (or at least over-exposed....is anyone familiar with the term saturation airplay? any merit their work had is dissolved by the fact it gets played every other minute).

it's interesting that whenever someone compiles a "best ever" list, their most recent faves always manage to sit near the top and then drop the following year. anything that is "best ever" would have to be something which pioneered a genre or defined a generation, or even means something deeply personal and significant to you. my other criteria would be "must be at least written, and preferably performed, by a person and not a computer" - i.e. it must require talent. hence a large portion of the current crop of so-called hits falls well short.

among my favourites, in no particular order, would be:

nirvana
the beatles
the doors
the sharp (aussie band from the early 90s)
the screaming jets (another aussie band).
john farnham (aussie singer)
queen

this list is by no means exhaustive because even average bands can stumble upon works of genious, but those above were fairly consistent.

I'm not a fan of radiohead no - but i dont have such bad feeling towrds their music, its just coldplay, they really do make me want to kill myself, all their singing about how hard done to he is and how much it rains on him. It cant be that be he gets to shag Ms Paltow i think, and has loads of dosh. Tell me thats not worth smiling about.

I might even go so far as to say the bloke is a talentless arse, preying on the fact that loads of people think their lives are crap and buy his records because it makes them feel they arent alone.

NEWSFLASH Mr Coldplay - you could be an ethiopian, an Iraqi, or maybe even a (look out) woman.

Now then you could whinge about stuff.

Radiohead arent too bad tho.

Any michelle McAnus fans here?
Now the first thing i need to tell you is don't just go around decappitating zombies left right and center.

It started off so well
They said we made a perfect pair
I clothed myself in your glory and your love
How I loved you
How I cried...

yep. another one of my favs. They were playing it in Dixons at the airport yesterday morning and I had to stay until the song finished

On my list there would feature a lot of stuff from Mark Bolan T-Rex and other such bands from that era

How about some 'opera-tic' ones. Recently, I stumble upon a BOSE shop near the metro, in one of the finest malls there. The salesman made a demo about their latest speakers (state-of-the-art), so my Dad and I listened. They played the concert of Andrea Bocelli (blind man)/ A Night in Tuscany - genre, in the likes of Pavarotti et al. I got the shock of my life when they played the song "Time To Say Goodbye"- Bocelli's duet with Sarah Brightman, it was truly G R E A T !!!!!!! After a week, I bought my own copy of the concert in DVD format.I also liked the song sung by Bocelli with the title - 'Santa Lucia Luntana' and 'O Sole Mio (Di Capua/Capurro)'. During the recent past, I really never liked Pavarotti et al when they made 'hit' concerts, until I listened to Bocelli's . . .

nessun dorma - luciano pavaroti or sir harry secombe (take your pick)

amigos para siempre - jose carreras and sarah brightman

music of the night - michael crawford (from phontom of the opera)

bring him home- rob guest (aussie, from les miserables)

can you hear the people sing - anthony warlow (aussie, from les miserables)

other (classical) singers of note: kenneth mckellar, marina prior (aussie), bryn terfal

*and tbh too many good songs to list*

i went to see jose carreras with marina prior live once at the Melbourne Park (formerly Flinders Park) - it was absolutely fantastic. michael crawford live is brilliant not only for his singing but because of his comedy background. i have managed to see anthony warlow in both phantom and les mis, as well as live with sarah brightman. i also remember seeing kenneth mckellar with my mum once, and he was very good as well.
