yes you can, orange haven't changed their policy to 3 months, it's still monthly if you want,
you can buy the phone on £97 a month and get the handset free and then drop down after one month, you have to wait about a week for the first bill to be produced, then as soon as you've recieved it, you can phone up orange and tell them to leave a note on the account to change the tariff for the next month and they'll do it, and when you buy the phone, ask for world budle 5 and not 3, both are free for the first month so you might aswell get more out of it, (they have to activate it manually), and also, i had to fight my way to get the 150 free photo messages for 30 days which you will qualify for if you get it tomorrow, so ask about that too, and if they say you don't get it, argue them down coz it's an orange promo which you qualify for this and next month, ...other than that, orange are still 1 month and nothing else

Just to confirm that I have been informed that what has been said with regard to Orange is true...
Before purchasing my P900 from CPW, i emailed them, and was informed that I would have to remain on the original tariff I chose for 3 months, for BT, they said it was 6 months...
When I actually went to the shop, the woman who served me said that "strictly", they are told that you have to wait 3 months on Orange, HOWEVER, she was aware that some friends of hers had actually reduced the tariff after the first month, since Orange brand their tariffs as being "Your Plan", you are therefore free to chose what you pay and what you get, without being penalised...
Whilst it appears to be possible though, who knows what kind of hassle that may arise from it... the decision, as they say, is yours !

@People, i HAVE downgraded more than one Orange contract P900 in the last few days, within two weeks of taking them out, the guy that works for CPW has lots of conflicting stuff in his post becauuse CPW DESPERATELY don't want people to be aware of the real facts, they tell their staff it's 3 or 6 months to pass on to customers who then just "Believe" it without checking, it's not his fault, but in his first post he says "I could be wrong" but in the next post he says "i only post facts" only ONE of those statements can be true.but he IS trying to help, but you will not easily get a CPW person to spell out the facts because as someone mentioned ealier this loophole costs them money.
Remember when you downgrade an Orange tariff, you have to do it from the next billing period so you CAN'T downgrade until month two, but you can "Arrange" it during month one if you want.
Some Orange staff are also not sure of the situation & will advise you to check with CPW before they downgrade you, this AGAIN is just them protecting themselves from the fact that SOME companies build a proviso into their contracts. like Onestopphoneshop do.
Here's MY Proviso,
Ultimately it's got to be your own decision because there is always a risk that things can go wrong.
If you enjoy life then fine, but if you want to really LIVE, you have to take risks

And as for Orange tarrifs to go on when you downgrade, try their high speed data option - only ten pounds a month ! Which works lovely if you don't actually want to *use* the tarrif - say, if you only took this contract out to get a phone for cheap as chips and had another contract already, or summat.

Much of this was chewed over when the P800 was released,
here and on allaboutsymbian.
What came out of it was that the likes of Onestopphoneshop etc.
clearly state in their terms and conditions what the rules are
for downgrading the tarriff.
The likes of The Orange Shop and Carphonewarehouse do not
include a statement in the contract about the consequence
of changing tarriffs immediatley or any other restrictions.
Consequently they cannot enforce any additional charges.
That they have not changed their paperwork is the biggest
suprise, I would have by now.
If the staff in the shop tell you three or six or twelve months
then just get them to point to the clause in the contract
and if the cannot just accept the written terms.
I went through all of this personally with my P800 when
Orange suggested I wanted to make an additional contribution.
They went quiet when I suggested that they read the contract. |

One part right, one part open to interpretation! (there is a get-around!)
You can't downgrade until the next billing period - true.
You can't downgrade until month two - true only if you accept that 'month 1' could be as short as 1-2 days.
Bought my P900 on the 19th in Link, £50 on YP700 - well aware that my billing date (already have O contracts) is the 26th. Arrange transfer to HSD on 21st, O confirm HSD will be active from 26th. Get first bill for this contract for, have been charged £8 for the few days of YP700, and from then on it's £10 per month HSD.
My total P900 cost = £178 for whole year, + ~£10 to unlock.
If you ask, you can usually request a specific billing date on signing the contract. Always make it about a week after buying the phone, and you needn't pay for a whole month of £70, £100 etc of whatever high tariff you've chosen before downgrading.
