It would be too inefficient to use http:// proxy. The proxy will not be able to PUSH data to the phone, so basically the phone has to check with proxy all the time. Plus there is a lot of traffic overhead.

I'm sad to say you're probably right.

Morphun supports sockets right? But their business model doesn't include freeware on the other hand. Bugger.. 8-(

sonyericsson usually release phones that are the most fully featured on the market, they're like the swiss army knife of mobile phones. java on SE phones is new so they've overlooked a few things like wrath000 mentioned. i guess i have faith in SE and they will get all this sorted via firmware updates, they will be once more the swiss army knife of even all java enabled phones

I just installed webviewer on my T610 and it works excellent to open webpages, so couldnt a MSN or IRC application connect the same way this one does?

Well, in fact, the T610 in China (which is called T618) has a preinstall Java App call "Tencent QQ (Java Ver)". Guys from China or HK will know that "Tencent QQ" is very similiar to ICQ and it has the biggest users amount in China. Tencet QQ for PC supports Socks:// and Http://, I think this Java version use Http:// ...

If any Company develope a Java app like that, using "Http:// to Socks:// " and fully compatible with ICQ/IRC/MSN...... Well

I just checked the Java/MIDP documentation for SonyEricssons SDK. It does support UDP via a Datagram class. Not the best solution but a proxy switching sockets to datagrams could do it no? Not optimal but a little better than sockets via http.

I just saw this:

"Instant messaging for your new java mobile phone!
Chat with your MSN Messenger™ contacts on the go!"

"umsg has been tested on Nokia 3650, Nokia 7650 (firmware 4.39 or newer), Nokia 7210, Nokia 7250, Ericsson P800, Sony Ericsson T610.
umsg requires a Java-enabled handset with network access (GPRS), 30 kB storage and 200 kB heap at runtime."

Can anybody here try it out? I don't have access to a T610 yet.

Great news! I wonder how they solved it, probalby through a proxy of their own or something.

Dimos: Do you know how much data is being transfered back and forth when you're online? Is there any way of checking this? Thought it might get a little expensive for most of us since we pay for GPRS.

Well, the t610 does "record" how much data has been downloaded. Now, if only I could figure out how to install the damn program.
