i have a 03w14, and no hissing. It does need more memory though, for high usage, and a radio ( for commuting), and more annoyingly, you cann copy contacts from the phone mem to the SIM one-by-one. You must 'copy all'. very annoying.. |

OK,
so its confirmed that any phone made up to week 20 (0320) will probably have "the hiss"
Has anyone a week 21 or newer model??
It is now week 23, I would hope that any phone produced in the last 2 weeks would be hiss-free, if not then have issues. |

I just got mine today from T-Mobile and check for the hissing in story, heard nothing, tried it about 30 minutes ago and got the hissing! My guess is even though I tried to do it in a quite place inside of most stores isn't gonna be the best place to check. So I'll be taking it back probably tomorrow but I have 28 days so is it worth seeing if I luck out on another (they're all R2C) or should I wait until the next batch comes out?
And another thing, is there a shorter way to send texts and stuff because this just seems to take for ever with this menu setup.
And finally can someone tell me how to check which week it's made in?
Can you guess I'm new?

The level of hissing is directly proportional to the level of rf required. So it gets louder as the signal strength gets worse. Consequently if the store is a little noisy and has good signal strength, you might not hear any hiss. If the signal strength at your house is poor and it is quiet, it may hiss like crazy.
The week of manufacture is on a label behind the battery. It is a code such as this: 03W18 - meaning the 18th week of 2003. I heard that the hissing wasn't fixed until the 23rd week.
If anyone has bought a hiss free T610, please post your week of manufacture here! |

Mine from CPW also has the hiss. Sony said Celestica has a 24 hour turnaround but Celestica have now said that they will not be supporting the t610 for another 3 weeks, but it will then be a 24 hour service.
Told Sony who said that the latest batches should be OK and I should check with my dealer. However, they could offer me no way of identifying which is the latest batch.
CPW have said that all of theirs came from one batch but have said that I can exchange the phone up to 28 days. They will probably have more batches by then so I will call my contact in about 10 days to see if he has any news about new batches. Annoying, though, that I will have to redo all my configuration, voice control etc.
Absolutely APPALLING of Sony to mass release a product with such an obvious problem!!

I had a w19 Vodafone branded T610 which had "the hiss" - I've now got a w20 T610 from Expansys which also hisses, HOWEVER the hissing is very different and this one is, I suspect, a "hiss free" unit.
The w19 phone had a very loud, very distorted hiss, modulated by the audio signal. This was very distracting when holding a conversation and caused me to return the phone.
The w20 phone has a hiss which accompanies the audio but it is 'clean' (i.e. white noise) - it sounds like the hiss you hear from most portable audio equipment when it is turned to full volume with no signal - this isn't very loud in use and I don't find it distracting. I have owned, or used, many phones with a hiss as loud, or louder, than this. The audio quality is good and the voice quality is very clear; definately one of the better mobile phones I've owned in this respect.
Unfortunately for SE everyone is probably now listening for hiss - and will hear it even on "non hissing" units - a major PR mistake on their behalf. If they had fixed this before release (and it is hard to believe they didn't notice it before the device was released for sale) no-one would be listening for hiss or complaining about what it now produces. |

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has one which has been fixed to see if it hisses at all. Mine is week 17 but only hisses when the other person is talking and not when there is silence. |
