It is a sad state of affairs, indeed...
I can't believe that we are so far behind in cell phone technology!
I completely agree with Harleydog, if these companies learned to cooperate, we would be much farther along... Oh well! Look where we are with the mess called HDTV!

For those out there that say competition breeds advancement, bullshit; in this case, competition has resulted in a hodge-podge of crap. Just think once Att and Cingular migrate to GSM, there will still be Sprint and Verizon on TDMA/CDMA; will they become obsolete? Who knows what the US market will encouter; I hope Voicestream is smart enough, and not arrogant enough, to share their towers and position themselves to becomes better and stronger |

I am testing for At&t south of Orange County, and let me tell you the coverage rules they are building thier own towers, not like voicestream that when they hit CA will share Cingular towers. So wait and at&t will bring releafe to southern california, I don't know the rest of the US at&t connection but at&t is going all out on edge, expect at&t to be the first carrier in the US to go to edge and cingular the last.

Apman,
maybe they are approaching Caly different than they are Texas, because let me tell you their coverage is horrible; own towers or not. i am really disappointed. A friend just got an Att Gsm phone and she cannot be reached anywhere. She went to the airport yesterday and she was out of range.
What kind of bs is that, and why wouldn't Att share with VS and vice versa |

What's cingular's Web Address?
Doesn't anyone Know if there's GSM in San Jose? Sigh..
Iand I thought With a Tri-Band T68, I'll be able to be contactable in USA!!
Another thing, Anyone knows if SMS (receive) costs money? I know Sending(Of course) costs money.
Thanks for any and all help guys/gals.

Nikeow,
I does not cost money to receive SMS here in California. I have cingular and some places coverage is not so good, but others are great. You just have to be lucky with your location.

You should try PAC BELL. The GSM coverage is very good in Northern Cali, or at least is has been every time I've been out there!
You can roam on Voda with a tri-band phone, and it usually defaults to PAC BELL, but I never tried roaming over there on Orange (who apparently also have roaming agreements in Cali).
The US subscription calling plans normally include thousands of "free" minutes and some offer SMS as an extra. The trouble is that the US subscriber actually pays for both outgoing AND INCOMING calls... so you can consume your free minutes very quickly.
The reason for this is (i think) because calls to mobile phones are charged to the caller at the same rate as a land-line call. So local calls are free. The cellphone owner gets to pay the extra call charges... which can soon add up.
The same applies to SMS - my understanding is that you get charged for sending and receiving an SMS. Of course you may get some free with your calling plan, but still..! |

San Jose is covered by Cingular GSM. We've got lots of international visitors with tri-bands using it very successfully. |

Thanks Phenry.. I'll check it out when I get there.
Any idea on how the Prepaid package costs? I checked the website, it seems that they have packaged with a phone and there's all other kinds of charges???

Hello nikeow,
Prepay in california cost around 50 dollars with 30 dollars credit included. You can buy the sim card at any cingular shop. The price for calls are 35cents(peak time) 10cents(offpeak time) Nation wide.
SMS cost 5cents a msg.
Hope this helps

One more thing that is very strange in the US. You pay for incoming calls. So the prices per minute are for outgoing and incoming calls.

To clarify a previous post, Cingular and Pac Bell and one in the same. Cingular purchased the Pac Bell infrastructure some time ago. |

Hi Andre,
Thanks for the info. It's a real bummer for Incoming and outgoing calls. When I'm in S'pore, I used the prepaid and wow, It really drains down to $0 very fast cos of it.
5cents/sms is expensive. I pay 0.15 cents and already we're complaining. I average ~150 SMs/month..
Dang!
Thanks..
