Hi All,
Just a quick check. Planning to go to US soon. Just wondering if I can bring my T68 There. I have roaming but charges are very Expensive. Is there A 'Pay as you go' or 'prepaid' plan available there?
Can anyone please tell me about it?

It's most unlikely that u will have coverage in the US. I did'nt. That is becaus the Operators don't cooperate with the operators in the US yet |

That is not actually correct. What you can do is go to a Voicestream dealer, if they are in San Jose and get a prepaid calling card. You could also check out their website at www.voicestream.com and order one prior to your arriving in the US so that you have it working immediately.

There is no voicestream in California, right now only Cingular and let me tell you the coverage sucks!! At&t should be out here in May and I am testing thir network and I have to say 4-5 bars all over California they are spending close to 40 billion $$$ on thier gsm network since they paired with  for deployment of 3g

I travelled to Caly a few months ago and my voicestream phone worked fine, a little streaky in areas.
Att in dallas blows chunks. I go to the airport and there is no coverage, i go in a building, there is not coverage, althoug where there is coverage you are right that it works real well. Hope they spend that money quickly and connect the entire US.
I though Att was working together with Cingular sharing tower space? |

travel tip:
want to be in contact without paying through the nose?
enable your roaming and divert all calls to voicemail before you board the plane...leave a message saying your abroad, not picking up messages but can be contacted via sms...voila, same global contact no high charges.
ps you have to check that sms works both ways first though.
pps never been to San Jose so no insight on network availability i'm afraid. |

Just checkst the VS site and they have coverage in San Jose, so you should have no problem finding a VS store that can sell you a prepaid card |

I live in Southern California too and was wondering how you were able to get GSM service from AT&T here. I already have service from AT&T and just bought a T68. I've been thinking that I'll have to move to Cingular, but maybe I can stay with AT&T? Any tips?

You can't yet get an ATT gsm subscription plan in Southern California. At least not yet. They've got it in some places like Florida. People who have ATT gsm subscription from places where they offer it, can use their gsm phones in Southern California, but the gsm service here is not provided by ATT.
I had to go with Cingular with my T68, and their coverage in LA is pretty bad. At least compared to ATT which I used to be with.

Thanks for the info, that's great news. I wonder when we can expect ATT to offer gsm service in Southern California...?
I did a test here in LA but ATT didn't show up yet. I guess I'll try again in a different part of town. Thanks again, I am feeling a glimmer of hope of better coverage sometime in the near future now. |

Apaman, do you work for AT&T? Are you a beta tester for the AT&T GSM network? I guess the real question is: Can I become a GSM tester for AT&T in S. CA (if there is such a thing)? Like I said earlier, I would rather stay with AT&T than have to switch carriers. Especially if AT&T's GSM network will be available here in May... |

Once again, US carriers are not getting it. Att has sporadic GSM coverage to say the least. Since Voicestream already has most of the US covered, would it not make sense for Cingular and Att to obtain the license to use existing towers?
No, what they do is go out and transform their existing towers which takes time, money and makes for bad coverage
We just don;t get it :/ |
