I guess you're not in the business... Mandatory and optional are the words that counts. You can of course check this from 3GPP if you're not taking my word.

So, first of all, EDGE is absolutetly not expensive to implement in a network, compared to the cost a full-fledged UMTS network implies.
Then, allowing a simple software upgrade to enable EDGE compatibility on phones, sounds, well... too good to be true, doesn't it? Nonetheless, EDGE is mainly a higher compressed variant of gprs, where you can bundle more slots, so, perhaps, a software-upgrade could do. But I wouldn't count on it...
And after all, I don't need a phone that I can stream a movie on. Sounds like bs to me. Why would you want that? I mean, the cute little movies on the p800 are nice, but I don't see any other use than showing it off to your friends. But when it comes to fun, I still prefer my home-cinema with 6 speakers and a big tv-screen...
Some day perhaps, when we all have implanted lcd screens in our eyes, and the phone can send the movie in dvd quality directly into the brain, well... I might reconsider. But for now, I'm all set.
Thanks for reading

extract this from E/// site on EDGE :-

Enhanced Data for Global Evolution

technology that gives GSM the capacity to handle services for the third generation of mobile telephony. EDGE was developed to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed, 384 kilobits per second. EDGE uses the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure, logic channel and 200kHz carrier bandwidth as today's GSM networks, which allows existing cell plans to remain intact.

So doesn't that mean that if the device supports mp4, it also supports H263 Profile 0 Level 10? Since the H263 is mandatory, and device that supports mp4 means that they opted to include the optional protocol???

P800 whitepaper:
Streaming Support in the P800
The Video Player can be launched from hyperlinks in the Browser or in messages. Content is
streamed using RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) session control according to 3GPP
specification.
Audio support is AAC and GSM-AMR according to 3GPP
The following video codec support is provided according to 3GPP:
• MPEG-4 Simple Visual Profile Level 0
• H263 Profile 0 Level 10
• H263 Profile 3 Level 10

To meet the 3GPP standard, H.263 Profile 0 Level 10 codec has to be supported, ie. it's mandatory. As an optional also these other two codecs may be supported.

Only MPEG-4 codec may be supported, but then it's not according the 3GPP standard.

Here's a link to a document which descripes how you interpret the different words in the specifications, http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2119.txt
