In my opinion, these are the best camera phones:
2 MP - Sony Ericsson K750/W800/W810/W900/P990
3 MP - Sony Ericsson K770/T650 (I would also add couple of Samsung 3 MP AF and Fixed Focus phones for their
decent quality)
5 MP - i-mobile 902, Motorola ZN5, Sony Ericsson C901, Nokia 6700, (iPhone 4 will join this group soon) (F480i, Jet
and few more Samsung phones also have decent quality, at least better than SE Cyber-Shot line, K850,C902/3)
8 MP - Samsung i8510 Innovo8, Nokia N86, (Motorola MILESTONE XT720 looks promising)
12 MP - Samusng Pixon 12 ( Nokia N8 will probably take Pixon's crown)
14 MP - Altek Leo (At the moment the only 14 MP phone

CCD phones from Korea & Japan would beat all these phones, except for i-mobile 902 & Altek Leo, sadly we can't use their phones!

@Bonovox
The Pixon12 was pulled off the shelves because of some issues and subsequently discontinued by Samsung.

Personally i believe the iphone 3G is overated. The Samsung Tocco is so much better than the iphone, as is the Samsung Omnia. The Samsung i850 8mp is fanatastic too as it's the first 8mp camera phone in Europe.If your main use for the phone is photos and calling, don't waste the money on an iphone, which takes only decent pictures.
I'd say the phones that come nearest to point and shoot replacement are the Nokia cameraphones, especially the N82 and the N86.

...if it weren't for the camera suffering from Alzheimer's. With most point and shoot digicams the camera will remember the settings you used last time. With all Nokia camphones I've used so far, as soon as you close the camera it will forget all the settings you changed and always start up again with the defaults.

Indeed. That's the a big weird problem with Nokia cell-phones. I miss that in my E72. Everytime I enter the camera I need to re-set all settings... Kinda boring... We should be able to at least define a default profile, like the custom one.

Seems Nokia's N8 will have the forgetting-all-settings problem fixed: according to GSMArena.com: If you prefer the more processed look, you can adjust the color and sharpness settings on-the-fly and the Nokia N8 will remember those settings for the next time you start the camera. (Source)

I only have personal experience with a few 8mp phones (HTC Incredible, Sony C905a and Nokia N86)... but of those three phones, the N86 produces the best photos in most every regard when compared head to head with the others.
