How true.
The same is indeed true for every S60v5 handset (and obviously other devices too). But, if you look at the problems with the 5800 and N97, then look at http://forums.samsungi8910omnia.com/ to see the problems with the I8910 HD - you'll see just how bad things can be.
Nokia has pretty much fixed things up now. Samsung has also given Italian and Chinese users plenty of updates, to the point where the latest Italian ROM is pretty amazing (I'm tempted to go back to using my I8910 HD until the Satio gets an update). I wonder how long it will be until Sony Ericsson fixes all of its own issues. I guess we must have faith!
I know the HTC Hero had a few quirks when it came out, prompting a new firmware that speeded it up considerably, but it had nowhere near the issues - and that had HTC Sense & TouchFLO added on to a relatively new OS! It is actually possible to get things right from the outset if you try hard enough.
Dare I say it, having used the HTC HD2 for a bit, even Windows Mobile 6.5 is coming on well with the HTC add-on stuff. By rights, this should mean Sony Ericsson can't mess up the X10 even if it tried. Why do I think I may be proved wrong?!!!
