Is the duo's limit to 128mb dictated by the current specifications of the memory producers or by the MSDUO standard? Just wondering if there are going to be MMC/SmartMedia adaptors with DUO connectors?Maybe there would be something like SE Bluetooth Audio Player -for memory storage? Have You seen the SE HBM-30-Wireless Handsfree with Digital Music Player? I'm waiting for HBH-50 -BT Handsfree. Regards! Peter

Hiya,
The P800 WILL NOT take a MagicGate stick even though they show the image of one! There is a small print on page 31 of the newest White Paper:
http://www.clubsonyericsson.com/products/p800/p800_whitepaper.pdf
There are a few documents on the net that refer to the P800 taking 1Gb eventually too.

Hey..
I just had to reply to this.
Zoidy, I must say that your are both wrong and right..
It's correct that P800 doesn't support the copyright protection mechanism that's available with the Magic Gate memory stick.
But you can use on P800, for it's possible to use the stick as a storage for pic's, doc. etc...
that's what I get out of the text in the white paper that's released from SE...
Yours.
Onegin.

Hiya,
Yeah, thats what I though, it's worded pretty badly. Great, at least I can have a 64Mb card when I get my phone then
I actually saw the January '03 White paper which is a LOT clearer! It does take the Magicgate sticks . Page 42 :

Duo sticks can in theory be op to 2GIG in size, Normal sticks could go to 4GIG.
As tightly stated above 64MB is now available but 128 is on the way but larger sizes are alredy roadmapped. Sony has got a bit of a fight on it's hands now as SD cards are going 256MB and beyond and they have a Roadmap now (and perhaps more important is that SD cards are supported my many companys where as MS are traditionally only found in Sony kit)
For more info see : http://www.memorystick.org/e-index.html
For now, 128MB is a requirement, 16 is useless and frankly a bit of an insult (even the 3 year old MP3 player for the T68i came with 32)

so 2 summarize
p800 will take and accept magicgate duo's no problemo, it just dont support the DRM magicgate bit of em,
the duo format is roadmapped to go up to 2 gig - this was released inadvertently by sony a few months ago on the web site, incidentalyl it also showed the normal mem stik's will be goin to 5 gig ain q3 2004 !!
i think that answers everyones probs !

The duos will go higher. The whitepaper I've read said they will go as high as 1 gig. But now I'm reading from you guys that the p800 won't support higher than 128?
I will write to se about this.... |

contaygious is right...MS DUO will NEVER go aboove 128mb. The road map which you mentioned and the whitepaper are now outdated. MS Duos were supposed to go to 1gb but they can't! Normal memory sticks will only go up to 256mb now, and even that's not a true 256mb stick, it's two 12mb sticks built into one with a switch to change between them. The only memory sticks that will go above this are the new MS Pros, which currently have 256, 512 and 1gb sizes, with a theoretical max size of 32gb. MS Pros will not fit into the P800. Hope this answers a few questions!

So the 128MB limit is a P800 hardware limitation? What if they make 256 MG Duos? Those won't work? Why not? If the 64MB MG Duo works, why shouldn't the 256MG Duo?
I don't think they've reached a physical limitation on the size of the chip just yet. |

no the 128mb limit is NOT a P800 hardware limitation. MS DUOs will never go above 128mb - white or purple

Hi,
thats funny, I could swear that it says in the P800 whitepaper that the Duo will eventually go to 1Gb! Oh hang on, yep, 'roadmap for 1Gb Duos in the future'.

P800 can only support up to 128mb memort stick duo by standard means
there was a replacement back cover you could get at one time which provided support for standard size memory sticks (rather than duo) which meant that you could use the 256mb memory stick select. This was a memory stick (not memory stick pro) which had 2 banks of 128mb in the one card but you had to switch manually between them
