Mp3 is universally known but not as good as lossless. Rip @320k for best quality especially if you use "good" head/earphones. I use Shure's sound isolation phones so I can literally "hear" the difference in bitrate quality!
Flac is better as it preserves the music quality. Problem is... not all personal music players (PMPs) recognize Flac!
Apple iTunes's AAC is good as long as you rip via Flac as AAC.
Ipods will recognize the format, obviously, but so do some PMPs like SE phones!
One thing good about having high quality music files and using "good" earphones is that you can turn DOWN the volume on the PMPs, thereby preserving your hearing while listening to CD quality music!
That's the primary reason I got the Shure earphones and rip at high rates!

P.S. all my files are encoded in m4a on my k800, 2gb card... and they all play fine. As i am not so high on high-Q music, they work quite fine for me... If anyone doesnt like 128kbps AAC+ then. gofor 256kbps mp3 or 198kbps MP3.
The WMA format is too close to AAC+ , but AAC+ beats it in lower bitrates and MP3 beats it in higher quality...
