For years on my pc i been transfering my music to my mp3 player or mobile phones as WMA files. I have decided to change format on the pc tomorrow to maybe mp3 which i have not done before. Although i know how to do it my question is which format sounds better and takes up the least space at 128kb's? For some reason i just never changed format and dont know which is generally the better sounding format. Cheers.

I usualy do AAC @ 256kbps, or Mp3 @ 192kbps, both sound realy good. AFAIK best is WAV but those come out huge.

Ok cheers. Lol i thought WAV was crap shows how much i know. On my pc i never seen the option for AAC although i do know it sounds good and it uses up less space too. I know Apple and Nokia use it alot AAC.

even AAC is old now...
AAC+ is the new thing in...
a mp3 is inferior in qulaity to AAC+
encode your files to m4a format...
that's the best option
m4a is aac..
video is mp4 and audio is m4a

mp3's are quite old now...
wav is CD-quality format.. which means that almost 8 songs will take up 700mb!
not practical!!!
use itunes and m4a!

or get a windows media plugin...

Flac is the best it's lossless, doubt the phones can handle Flacs though, just use 192kbps+ mp3's, the point of AAC is to sound good at low birates 96kbps etc, no point in having a 256kbps AAC.

why do you want to encode 200+kbps songs????
i mean does it matter, if we encode them at 128??
they still sound good..
and more fit into the limited memory of our players....

Why is there no point in 256kbps AAC? I thought a 96kbps AAC file was supposed to be similar to a 128 MP3, and a 256kbps AAC would therefore be comparible to a 320kbps MP3. I mean I would rather listen to a 320kbps MP3 rather than a 128kbps MP3, especially if I were to hook my player up to a speaker set. So a 256 AAC makes sense to me

FLAC is playable on Smartphones, just saw it in the File Associations list on CorePlayer in my s60, how large are FLAC files though on average eg. On a 5min song?

@GUCCI : 5 min song in Flac is about 30 MB, depending on the compression level. Although I use Flac for my home listening, I usually convert the songs to MP3 - VBR, target bitrate around 200-256 before transferring it to the phone. This gives me manageable size/transfer times, and I just can not hear the difference. There is a debate if difference between 320 CBR - 256 VBR - LOSSLESS is even audible on anything other than hi end gear, so don't be to bothered by it. For MP3's try to use the latest version of LAME encoder and there shouldn't be any problems. For anyone interested, www.hydrogenaudio.com forum is good place to visit ( or was, hadn't been there in a while )

okay, here's a audio conversion guide:

# FOR ARCHIVE CD's >>> use FLAC
FLAC is losslesss codec, which means no loss in quality, hence largest size. suitable for your cd collection on pc

# FOR SONG ARCHIVE >>> use 256+kbps mp3
MP3 is the most famous codec. Use it to store songs in high quality only if you are worried about space and FLAC. Also, mp3 is played universally, FLAC has some codec issues on most devices

# FOR MUSIC PLAYER >>> use 128 or below AAC+ or M4a
AAC+ or M4a is the newest codec. Used in Players as they sound better at lower bitrates than any other codec. AAC+ is better than an MP3 at 128kbps and below. Above that, Mp3 give better output... Use AAC+ if you want to save space on your music player, and have good music...

P.S. all my files are encoded in m4a on my k800, 2gb card... and they all play fine. As i am not so high on high-Q music, they work quite fine for me... If anyone doesnt like 128kbps AAC+ then. gofor 256kbps mp3 or 198kbps MP3.
The WMA format is too close to AAC+ , but AAC+ beats it in lower bitrates and MP3 beats it in higher quality...
Choose your formats..

When i was only using wma files for ages i never actually realised where to change the settings until i found how to change it by accident. I noticed by default my brothers Nokia pc suite uses aac.
