Well, look at what happens to GM!
Never a truer word. People will laugh at this, but I believe Nokia is going to be in serious trouble soon.

I get confused when they compare smartphones and dumpphones. Really, what is lacking in W995 that smartphones have other than say nice email client that supports HTML? Not all smartphones OS support active standby screens. At least in case of SE phones there is a app that can show calendar events on standby screen. |

The gizmodo review was BS. It was just a way of promoting the iphone. Imagine clicking a picture with a 2mp iphone cam and with an 8mp w995 cam and displaying the pic in 600x400 pixels.

It's all about the user interface. What's basically happening here is there's a new generation of smartphone (iPhone, Pre, Android) and they are killing both dumbphones and "traditional" smartphone OSs like S60 and WM on usability. The point of the article is why charge people for a long list of impressive features which, in practice, can't be easily used because the interface belongs in 2002.
In all honesty the same criticism is true of many older smartphones too, especially S60, and the article does touch on that.
The camera is a red herring, of course the W995's camera is better than the iPhone's (although perhaps not quite so good in low light going by that pic), but that has nothing to do with the point of the article.

i partly agree with the article, why get a java phone worth $600 when it cant even play my DivX movies, play my flv YouTube vids in its media player or allow me to install a decent web browser besides the resource hungry OperaMini. But at the same time the dude is praising the iPhone as if it is the best thing since sliced bread, personaly i like having sub menus, thats another thing i like about owning an S60 and even like WM for, i arrange the whole Menu system the way I LIKE IT, all the basics like Messaging, Call Log, Calender, Maps, Contacts, Music Player, Gallery, Camera, Settings and default web browser are in the Main Menu, then EVERYTHING else is placed in a sub menu folder called Applications and in there are a bunch of other sub menu folders each with a bunch of built-in apps and 3rd party apps that are related to the folder menu name and thats how i like it, the iPhone menu is WAY TOO basic for me, all though yes it is very pretty and flashy, whoopy twang !

It's not a review it's just a blog post, rant or column however you want to call it. But definitely not a review.

I get what he's trying to say but it comes across as a drunken rant.
One button press to activate the camera.
One to activate the media player.
What features is he referring to exactly? Did he not discover the shortcut menu? You can put a shortcut to any app there.
There are more expensive phones out there that do a lot less but if you have that much money to burn then its your money. Personally, I wouldn't pay that much for any phone.

The author was partly right about the feature phone thing, but still. Many people don't need app support. Many just want a nice feature-laden phone. And he didn't even write something remotely relevant to the phone itself (bar the suspicious camera performance test). Seriously, apple fanboi much?
