Thats even better. Who wants to own a slick device that every other Tom, Dick and Harry has got.
Exclusivity is a good part of the appeal.

Sony isn't trying to steal the market back from Apple.
If they wanted to im sure they would be doing things a lot differently. Especially when Apple first brought the ipod out. Sony could have had (kept) the number 1 spot, market share wise, but they made the wrong decisions.
O well, all that matters is Sony make MUCH better devices, no thats not an opinion, its fact. The only way an ipod will sound better than a Sony is with good earphones and a portable amp!
@goldenface
too true. i hate white earphones!!!

I have always maintained that generally Sony walkmans are better sounding when compared to Ipods. Ipods are nothing special and I should know, I used one for a year but to say Sony doesn't want Apple's position in this segment is false.
The world of business is about revenue and Sony would dearly love the revenue that comes with the top spot that Apple enjoys with Ipods.
What's makes it worse is the 'muscle' that Sony has in music, the fact that they are the inventors of this segment also counts. They know they should be at the helm but they are not and are pushing Apple very, very hard. |

ok i wrote the wrong thing. Sony arent trying to get number 1 back, yes they would love to be, as would any company, but they arent making the right decisions, nor trying hard enough like you say EMS06. At the moment the way they are doing things, seems like they are happy to sit back and have a small market share. They need to increase marketing also.
This x series walkman should do quite well in the market imho. But needs to have a good marketing campaign.

Absolutely >500!
Sony has made gross mistakes. I also agree that what they are looking for in the short term is an opening, once they get a substantial share then it's all systems go. Of course, as you put it, they need a very good marketing strategy which lacks a great deal from them and their cellphone arm.
I guess they will have to play a waiting game while delivering cutting edge products for now.
If you ask me they have definitely lifted off! |

Sounds like a great product, but the technical "crap" has to be cut back on.
That just doesn't to appeal to 90% of the kids from my generation.
Seriously, nobody ever carries anything other than an iPod for music. Ask randomly in schools, mine at least (which is a large state comprehensive of about 1500 pupils), and 9 out of every 10 kids you ask will have an iPod of some sort, and most are likely to be quite unwilling to give their "cool" iPods up.
Some of those who own iPod Nanos buy a new one when it is released; it's an annual event for them.
This sounds great to people who understand what an OLED screen is, but nobody other than us techies gives a sh*t. Cruel truth. I can't see it defeating iPod. I'm no expert, but I know people my age quite well, and I think that's where the money is.

I don't think this is aimed at the kids to tell you the truth and I couldn't give a hoot if it topples the iPod / iPod touch or not. Who really cares.
Its a lot more appealing AFAIC.

I would rather be different from everyone else dont like Apple. I have had for 4 years a Creative Zen Touch 30 giga byte mp3 player and for me the sound is amazing. I dont care about video though i guess young kids do. I am not a jump on the what everyone else is doing bandwagon |

Neither am I, but most are. I have to say though, nothing comes close to my iPod 5.5G 80GB. Awesome media player. Screen may be the size of a peanut, but the HDD is massive, and it works relatively fuss-free. And iTunes takes some beating in terms of music management!

I honestly thought it was going to be a lot more expensive than it is for some reason - £200 seems just about OK for a hot piece of kit.
It would be nice to have a choice of headphones, though the screen does sound amazing from the reviews I have read. |

Well, 'What-hifi' say it sounds great! Their disapointments are the headphones and the poor internet experience.
For me the most important part is the music quality, I can always change the headphones. So, ya, it sounds like it is all that when it comes to audio. |
