Walkman bites back |

It burst into our lives 30 years ago letting us listen to music on the bus out jogging or even at work or school. But after being eclipsed by sleeker and more innovative competitors the Sony Walkman is now staging a comeback. A new model called the X Series is threatening to snatch the title of most acclaimed portable media player from Apple's ipod touch. It might look similar to its rival on the outside but the X Series houses some cutting edge technology. Its offers sharper pictures and video from its next generation OLED 3 inch touch screen. And incorporates digital noise cancelling technology which eliminates 98 per cent of background sound. TV sets using OLED organic light emitting diode screens have a contrast rating of 1,000,000 to one which is ten times sharper than most LCD screens. Even better the X Series screen uses less power than that in rival devices such as the ipod touch so the batteries last 50 per cent longer when playing videos. The new Walkman is also slightly smaller than the ipod touch with screen measuring 3in across the diagonal compared with 3.5in. And there is one other key difference between the rivals the Walkman includes an FM radio. The X Series is already gathering glowing reviews. According to the gadget website T3 it is'nt just an ipod rival. Its a Walkman saviour. The reviewer adds Sony invented portable music in the late 1970s and dominated for two decades. Them the Apple ipod appeared and Sony did'nt so much drop the ball as meekly hand it to Apple. Thats all history now. The X Series is where the Walkman fightback begins. The first Walkman a bulky portable cassette player was reportedly invented so that Sony's chairman could listen to his opera collection on long haul flights. A commercial version went on sale in 1979 and was a huge success. Today ipods and other media players owe much to Sony's original ingenuity. However the Walkman has failed to stay at the cutting edge of these developments over the past few decades. Sony said This is really a new era for Walkman and it has been a while since we had a product we are this proud of. Great i wonder if the X Series will happen in SonyEricsson phones |

I noticed these have S Master digital amplifier inside which gives amazing sound cos my Sony hi fi has S Master digital amplifier and its sound is so spacious. Does anyone see or think SonyEricsson might see this tech in its Walkman phones?

Fantastic device and getting great reviews.
Slacker and YouTube infiltrate Sony X-Series Walkman
If you've been drooling over the Sony's touch-screen Walkman, the X-Series, since it was initially announced at CES 2009, I've got some good news and some bad. The bad news is that you're going to have to wait some more--the player isn't expected to hit shelves for another month or so. (SonyStyle will start taking preorders today, however.) On the plus side, the good news is considerable. The new Walkman is a joy to use and it packs in a cadre of fun features, not the least of which are onboard apps for YouTube and Slacker.
Yep, you read right: you can get all the free music you want on the X-Series Walkman. And unlike with the Apple iPod Touch, you won't need a constant Wi-Fi connection to have access to it. While the X-Series does include a wireless antenna for hopping on to hot spots, the Slacker app only needs access to the network when refreshing station content. Each time you refresh, music is cached to the Walkman so that you can listen to it wherever you are, regardless of Internet access. (In other words, it functions in exactly the same way as on the BlackBerry.)
contunues....

I always loved sony's SQ in their true walkmans. and yes S-Master sound engine (combination of DSP and amplifier) is really amazing, even the bravias have one.

sony makes far better MP3 players than Apple. But the hope of actually having to cut into ipod's market share, will, i am afraid, always remain a hope.

True. Apple has built an almost impenetrable loyalty that it will take Sony forever to knock them off their pedestal.

True, and Sony doesn't have a chancer at stealing some of the iPod touch owners until they launch a rival to the app store, which is virtually impossible. |
