Oooooh, Big Brother is watching us eh?

Ah well. I'll just get another unregistered sim and top that up too. I guess 3UK are just a bit sloppy when it comes to monitoring where their data usage goes.

Good for us!

Ah i am being watched eh? So i bought an Orange branded c510 but i debranded it. But will Orange still see it as one of their branded handsets or not? Can they tell if i have debranded it just by me using it? Also i seen 3UK advertise their Facebook phone the INQ1 saying you can use it as a modem. Mmmm

Orange can't see what software it's running, just what phone it is and the IMEI, but I doubt they'd really care wether you'd debranded it or not.

As for Three and the INQ1 being used as a modem, they also do it with the Skype Phone and the Skype S2, it's one of the perks of there network and I think it's a good idea.

When iPhone OS 3.0 comes out, it'll support use as a modem so rumours are that O2 are looking into making a chargeable bolt on to let you use it as a modem in the future...

Thats freaky! I hope they aren't be watching you personally - like through your integrated webcam

I guess all networks have various limits but that 250mb is a bit of a laugh anyway.

What gets me is that the government plans to make broadband accessible for most of the population - via landline or otherwise - so all these silly restrictions should be on their way out soon anyway.

Yeah its good to have one network at least which let you do that. 3UK are very good for data but if everyone starts using their phones as modems the network is going to start clogging up? Or am i wrong? I know 3UK have massive capacity but surely even they will draw the line somewhere.

Exactly right, that's precisley why networks have excessive usuage policies in the first place, to prevent one person spoiling it for the rest.

Well not quite.

A few years ago we were warned that each time one or two users tried to stream 3G data onto their phone, it took up most of the capacity of that native cell, and caused a network restriction but I rather think that the capacity has been increased since then.

If the networks can't cope with one or two people streaming mobile data nowadays then THEY are falling short and are failing to keep up what people come to expect.

What with google maps, iPlayer, youtube, and all the rest of it? We've come a long way from browsing simple wap pages.

People want to be online constantly now and they should be able to do it without worrying about being charged extortionate fees for the pleasure.

I haven't had a landline phone for a couple of years and without it I seem to be coping quite well -what with competitive mobile broadband tariffs becoming available. The mobile networks should jump on the opportunity and run with it, who needs a landline and hi speed broadband when the mobile networks can do just as good a job.

Still not entirely true. It's not a case of one or two people streaming, it's a case of constant, persistant over-usage that drains other people. Landline providers are the same. Tiscalli for example have a 'family time' limit imposed where by if you use your 'unlimited' connection for more than light browsing during 6pm and 11pm then you'll be capped for a month after a 'three strikes' rule, much like T-Mobile does with mobile broadband.

It's not a case of a couple of people streaming here and there, it's the one's who are using it as a constant home broadband replacement and going mental with it who end up dragging it down for everyone else.

What's over-usage exactly?

By who's standards?

The thing is, mobile broadband usage is rocketing, whether its via mobile phones, netbooks or laptops. Soon, they won't be able to distinguish between them any of them so they should stop trying to 'manage usage'.

I bet, any money, that the networks that don't provide for the mobile network users in the next few years, will be the ones that fall behind.
