O2 have just tried to penalise me for data usage.

I know there have been long discussions, and some heated, about o2 "unlimited" internet.
I thought i'd be really smart and see what the data usage actually is before i get the warning. I went past 250mb easily and carried on using it until i used 1.8gb. BIG MISTAKE
i just got a text saying a ban has been inforced on my data usage for excessive use.
So i called o2 and the guy took a while to get my records up after he did (with such a shocked voice) told me that my data usage was 1.8gb and the limit is only 250max, he questioned me asking how i used that much. I admitted that i plugged it into my laptop and he told me i have breached the terms and conditions and i should be charged for each mb (£3) which should total around urm £5400 or something? He put me on hold for 20 minutes and he got back and told me very stern words. That if i plug it in again i will be charged and he will let me off this once |

was this just in "one sitting" or was the data used over a couple days etc?
So the warning text came the second you reached 1.8GB, not 1.5, not 1, not 500mb but 1.8GB. interesting.
Be interesting to see what Daedulus & dupfold's reaction is to this  |

I'm up to 3.98GB on my £5/month mobile internet with 3UK and I have not received another warning since the one I received when I approached 1GB.
I plug it into my laptop and stream BBC iPlayer religiously!
Thats pathetic really, what exactly is their problem?

It's because you plugged it into your PC, your 'unlimited internet' bolt on is specified as for HANDSET use only, not for use as a modem.
They only stopped you and wanted to charge you because you did the dipstick test and used it as a modem, if you'd run up 1.8GB on your mobile and your mobile alone then you'd have been ok.
That made me and my colleage literally laugh out loud

I think admitting to plugging into the laptop was a big no no!
Still, I don't thnk its that unthinkable to run past your 250mb monthly data allowance these days. There is just so many ways for data to be eaten up.

Get yourself a seperate 3G PAYG sim and a usb dongle - or a spare 3G phone - and browse the internet from your laptop via SE PC Suite. I've got one in mine now with 3UK and it works a treat.

The 1.8 was done over about half a month, they said they could tell if it was used over the computer but i admitted it and they never actually said it 
The guy was nicish glad he wasn't an indian that cant do anything without contacting the manager.
How would i explain that bill to my dad?
And there is a lesson to be learn here dont use it as a modem |

The strange thing is, I bought a 3UK PAYG sim, bought a internet bolt on for £5 (with a supposed advertised limit of 1GB) and plugged it into my mobile broadband dongle for my laptop and I've well exceeded 1GB already.

Your very very lucky can you imagine being not let off and they demanded the £5400. Is it seriously worth getting into that much debt over internet browsing? You took a risk there cos they might not have let you off. Saying this i only once went over 500mb browsing on my old O2 number. I never recieved warning my credit just vanished.

Its ridicuous to even imagine it! And even more ridiculous for them to expect anyone, who isn't completely gormless, to agree to pay it!

So can they acually find out if ya plugging it into ya pc without u telling them other than u used a lot of data in a few weeks? So why did u get a warning at 1.8?

I actually think that £3 to £4 per MB when you go over your allowance is far too expensive. Customers paying that much per MB if they dont have an internet bolt on is a rip off. A mega byte is nothing how can you be expected to pay £3 for 1MB. Disgusting.

Well whats strange is that when I plug my PAYG mobile internet sim into my phone then it restricts me from visiting certain sites ( because I need to register as over 18 and all that).
But when I plug the same sim into my mobile broadband dongle, which is plugged into my laptop, I have no restrictions at all.
Which leads me to believe that its something to do with the device that the sim is plugged into.

Ah thats interesting. I have my Orange Safe Guard switched off but sometimes it registers as i have it on and i cant access sites. I then come out of it enter back in and its fine. Confusing

At all times, every network can see which devices a sim card has been plugged into in the past since it existed, as well as what it's plugged into now.
Likewise they can see which sim cards have been in a particular IMEI (both usb modems and handsets) since it existed.
Not to mention they can see what that device actually is, regardless of place of purchase of original network.
