I agree that the P1's keyboard is a good design, but conversely would have prefered a larger screen as I too mainly use HWR. The 'paris' slider design would have addressed this, but there again the flip design certainly had merits with the inclusion of a standard numeric keypad.
The best compromise for me would be a flip with the numeric keypad from the p990 (including D-pad), and the qwerty from the P1 
The obvious downside to this though is that it would make for a rather bulky flip due to the 'proud' keys required by the P1 design...so I'd be happy to settle for the qwerty from the P910. Unless some inovative retractable key option were possible, ie. that the qwerty keys sank back into the flip when it was closed. I estimate a movement of around 1mm would be all that's required.

The keyboard from the M600 (later to feature on the P1) was a brilliant design, and deserved to be carried on in later phones really. In many other ways the M600 wasn't a fantastic phone, and neither was the P1 in my opinion, but if that keyboard design could have been combined with something a bit more powerful (ie, something better than the ill-fated UIQ3) then it could have really been a knockout.

more powerfull hardware, yes...something "more powerfull" than UIQ3??? disagree completely...i love UIQ, like many, all it needed/needs was some evolution, and UIQ 3.3 seemed to show it was going on the right direction, and so did the screens of UIQ4

It's all history now, all I mean to say is I'd love to have that keyboard now on something bang up to date. I much prefer it to the "full" qwerty on my Tytn II for example, although I wouldn't swap the Tytn II for a P1.
It's a real shame if that keyboard is being retired along with the P1 - they ought to bring it back on a new WM device, or whatever else they have lined up in the way of smartphones in the future.

The P1i has a truly great keyboard (once you get used to it nothing compares), a good screen and good camera (yes I think so - show me a phone with better macro!). I'm due an upgrade but there is nothing around that comprehensively beats the P1i....and in a lot of respects there is nothing around that even equals it.

thatīs what makes the UIQ situation even worse...an evolution of P1, with UIQ 3.3, more powerfull processor, gps, 5mp camera etc etc would be a kick ass phone |

The P1i keyboard is awesome and one of the most innovative things from SE. Maybe the only ;-(
That was what kept me from switching to the iphone (among other things.) There's still a lot of major things yet to be fixed with the p1, simple copy and paste being one of them. There's a limit to the clipboard size, so you can't copy a lot of stuff, and the built-in email client can't handle cut and paste.
All that aside. The keyboard is just great, however, the only problem is that it limits the screen size of the phone. The only way to create a bigger screen with the P1 design would be to increase the length and width of the phone. I like the design of the new Xperia and its keyboard, and will wait till they move away from Windows Mobile, the SE fastport connector and include a standard headphone jack. |

I was just thinking about the same thing, the size of keyboard and screen.
The half cm on both sides (black part) and the 1 cm on bottom of screen (black again) couldve very well been used for the screen itself.
The bigger the screen the easier it is to use the finger driven interface.
Also, since finger driven UIs also feel more natural (more direct interaction with the OS)
I wouldve liked P1is default keyboard buttons to be a bit bigger too, and a keyboard setting which when chosen, might allow me to use one button for just a single key instead of the rocker keys (thatd make it good for single thumb texting since every key would just be one letter)
I personally wouldnt mind if the P1i grew a bit more wider and taller in order to incorporate these features, since itd make it all the more user friendly IMO.

The Sony Ericsson P1i has a similar form factor to the P990i, and features a touch screen and a QWERTY Keyboard. You can input text using the stylus via Handwriting Recognition. like i have said in previous posts with the same questions, the keypad rocks, i hated it when i first see it, trust me it takes all of a hour or so to get used to and after that you can text/email really fast, the only thing i use the virtual keyboar for is underscore

Well you are right... Handwriting comes very useful sometimes. But for longer typing (like msn messenger for e.g.) the qwerty gives you much more speed.
