What is the build quality like?

I find the quality on the T68's to be fairly high, some of them do creak in certain places, such as around the screen tho.

an S55 in the UK is about £10-£20 lower than a T68i, so I could easily take my T68 back and buy one, only bought a T68m on friday, but I can get the extra £100 if I decide on the S55.

This is my 6th T68m/i now in two weeks, all have had different faults, perhaps it is just me. The one I have now seems fine, but the keylights seem very dim in comparison to my previous Lunar Gray, I have a Ziroccan Gold now

Thanx

@Rolud

Some important questions...

Can you change the ringtone for SMS messages?

What does the phone do for a screensaver? (Does it have a white on black clock like the T68?)

Can you send (either via IR or BT) Java applets to it yourself or is it only possible to get them via download from a wap page?

Are they games on there anygood?

I'll probably think of some more later

Thank you in advance for your reply as I might consider getting this phone

Waouu… that’s a lot of questions…

1. Yes, you can change the SMS ringtone (any polyphonic or “standard”…) and you can also adjust the volume.

2. When I receive the phone, an “on animation”, an “off animation”, an “operator logo” and a “screensaver” were already put into the phone by “Swisscom” (the Swiss operator I’m using…) however it’s very easy to replace it…! You also have the choice to use the Siemens analogue clock in black and white AND, if so, you’ll have a small symbol showing any missed call, SMS, MMS, alarm…

3. I didn’t test the Java application… but I suppose you can, because you have in the box a small CD Rom with an application exactly like Windows Explorer, and you can add, move or delete whatever you want (with Bluetooth, IR or cable…) into any folder of the memory. BTW, into the Java folder, I have some .jad and .jar …!

4. About the game, you’ll find just one Java game… called “Magic Picture” and I didn’t find it really interesting…

One more thing about this phone : if you look at the comparison between the T68 and the S55, you’ll find first that the S55 is not a tri-band, but it is !! Then it doesn’t have voice call and voice memory but that’s wrong ! It does have both…
About the memory, it’s the same as the T68… about 1 Mb…

At least you dont have to unlock the keypad to check if you have any messages or missed calls.

I have just ordered a datacable and ict-14 from SE for me fone, will have to faf around with them to get a refund on the products, which will be a mess, lol.

I am a bit tempted about the S55, but I have had 5 c35's, 2 M35's and 3 S35's and they were all crap. They all had a weak feeling to them, and had buggy firmware on all handsets, and developed faults too quick, within weeks for most of them

I really like the T68m, but the S55 does have some handy extras that make me tempted, like knowing about calls when in idle mode etc

@LadFromWales85

Before my T68, I also had 18 months a S35i… and I liked the phone a lot !

A small precision : in idle mode with the S55, the coming symbol for something missing is always the same ! It means when you see it, you don’t know exactly what you missed until you unlock the phone…! After unlocking, you’ll see if it was a call, a SMS, a MMS or an alarm…
Anyway… it’s a lot more practical than nothing… !!

I am not sure what colour I want

Both phones seem to have large amounts of silver, so will look old quick.

I am more turned towards the Sterling Silver as it has black buttons. Am I right in thinking that the 6 top buttons dont light up!?!

What colour do you have? Is there anything missing on the phone that was on the T68i, anything extra, other than the obvious polytones and java What comes in the box

I did actually own a c35i for 13 months faultless, and a s35i for 8 months before selling it and getting a 6210, lasted longer than any of mt t68/m/i's!!!

Any other info you can give me to sway my decision?

I can get one with cam for £279.65 inc VAT

Thanxxxxxx

EDIT: does it have that crap battery low warning that the x35 range had, it even sounded when the phone was silent, and the phone usually turned off as the first warning was sounding

@ Rolud

Thanks for all the information! I think I'm beginnging to like the S55 more and more

Also, one more question for now Since you found errors on Esato's phone comparison table... Does it have voice control like the T68i? (So you can for example say the person's name you want to call)

@LadfromWales

Where can you get the S55 for that price? I've only seen £290ish and over...

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?action=info&p=29374&t=1020&l=3&AvdID=1&CatID=46&GrpID=6&s=pl (doesn't say if cam is included here at Komplett)

http://www.extele.net/view.asp?ID=316286

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=S55

Also, Phones4u have it in their website for £269 but they don't say if it includes the camera or not either

Thanks in advance to both of you guys

Mine is silver, however I didn’t have the choice, because Swisscom had only this one at the moment I bought it…

About the light, you’re right ! The keypad has only 2 LED’s, under the 7 and the 9 keys… and sometimes it’s pretty hard to well see the keyboard ! (in fact, it’s not harder as with the T68m… !!)

About Java, I tried this afternoon…! As a result, it works really fine…!!
What I did is :
- Download from Internet into the PC a game called “Asteroids”
- Extract the .exe to different folder (itself…) into the PC
- Copy the extracted folder to the Java folder of the S55 by Bluetooth
- Play the game… No problem and very easy…!! That’s pretty fun…!!!

About the battery warning… it’s just the same as all Siemens : it makes the noise three times and it shut down…

The thing I miss the most from my ex-T68 is maybe the “police size”…!! On the T68, I always had the small one… so on the beginning with the S55 it was a little bit strange to have those big letters…! Now I’m used to…! It’s just a shame that you can’t chose a little one… because when you surf Wap pages, the S55 had a small police and it’s just great…

@2tangy

Yes, it does have a voice call like the T68, but you can have 20 records only…

@all…

I whish you all the best for 2003…!!!!

@ Rolud

Thanks for the Java and voice info

I got another question for you if you don't mind

Does it lag when moving between menus and typing in text like the T68 and T68i does? (or is it pretty quick?)

Does the battery low warning sound even when the phone is on silent?

That is a big deal, and will annoy me loads, cos it always seems to suddenly 'beep beep beep beep beep beep beep beep'etc in the worst places it can

Thanx alot

Can you tell me if the number of the personn who calls you appears ? I mean if my girlfriend is registered in my phone with Home, Mobile and Business phone numbers, will the S55 show me if she calls from home, office or the street with her mobile... ?
My previous T68m didn't have this function at the beginning and it was annoying
I sync therefore I am...

i've tested several siemens before, and i don't like them. signal isn't that good, buttons depends on the phone, some bugs here and there, mostly in wap, GPRS and EMS. i've tested, C25,S25,M35,M45,S45.
i would never buy siemens. i'm happy whit T68 ist still the best phone except P800.
With Ericsson and Nokia gone: we must keep their spirits alive and buy JOLLA or YOTA

the siemans may have better ringtones but it looks like a brick and apparently Ericsson is looking at adding the poly sound and java to a new version of the T68 soon
