No problem!

Right, let me get this straight: The picture you showed me suggests that you need to plug the SATA adapter into one of the two Hard drive / CD-ROM IDE ports on your motherboard. Then, you need to connect a spare floppy disk drive power supply plug to the card itself (the small four pin ones).

Next, you need to plug the SATA drive's data cable into any of the adapter's SATA ports. It shouldn't matter which. If the SATA hard drive has jumpers, make sure that it is set to 'Master'.

Then, plug the SATA drive into the power supply using the power cable adapter that we talked about earlier.

Finally, plug your IDE hard drive and CD-ROM into the spare IDE channel and power connectors as you normally would. Make sure that the IDE hard drive is set to 'Master' and the CD-ROM to 'Slave', or vice-versa, it doesn't matter as long as they are not both set to the same.

You will have to look in BIOS to make sure that the first-boot hard drive is the one that has your operating system on. This is presumably the IDE drive in your case.

Good luck!

Ok,

What happens if you just click "next"? Can it not automatically find and install the drivers?

Which version of Windows are you using? Windows XP? If so, does it have service pack 2 installed?

That's only if your motherboard does not recognise the SATA drive when you wish to install windows, you do indeed press one of the function keys to load a driver in. But if windows is already installed, it's not normally necessary.

So this is a little strange! Have you searched google and / or the manufacturer's web site for any drivers for the adapter? It certainly sounds like there should be some somewhere!

The driver forum might come in handy!

Okey-dokey, what's the exact make and model number of the SATA converter card? With that information, we can search Google and a couple of other sites I know more specifically, to hopefully either find a driver or a solution to the problem.

The fact that windows is seeing the card as an unknown device suggests that it's probably not faulty, so there has to be a solution somewhere

didn't the adapter come with a cd or something? Can you see the chips on the adapter? IF so the biggest one should have a model number and manufacturer on it. This should help identify the IDE drivers needed.

You would probably be better off with a PCI to SATA adapter rather than the IDE adapter. PCI is faster than IDE.

You can get them pretty cheap nowadays. And they come with a driver, though WinXP SP2 will usually detect them.

Yeah, I'm beginning to agree with Max, this isn't looking good I'm afraid!

Ok, one more thing to try: Update your chipset drivers from this page here:

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/

Click on the "How to identify your chipset" link, download and install the relevant drivers. That might solve the problem since "hdc" presumably stands for "hard disc controller" which is normally part of the chipset.

But if that doesn't work, then you will need to somehow find a driver for that SATA card! Or give up and get a PCI SATA card as Max suggested
