k850i vs. P1i vs. LG u990 ? |

i had my choice limited down to LG Viewty and K850i. I've always been a loyal SE person but the LG Viewty sports an amazing camera and gorgeous 3inch touch screen. the phone is oh oh oh so lovely...for a while....
then u realise it can do nothing. and i mean NOTHING. the hardware may be excellent but the software is absolute CRAP. the phone is decent as a camera but rubbish as a phone. and nowhere near the functionality of the K850i. All you have to do is look through the Viewty's menus and you soon realise theres no interesting features.
anyway yeh i made a mistake in choosing the LG Viewty...but luckily for me, o2 give a 14 day return period so i gave it back and got the K850i and i'm glad i did. its so much better.
only features of LG i miss is the excellent video recording quality, lovely 3inch touchscreen and divx playback. |

also whilst i'm ranting about the viewty...
the touchscreen aint amazingly responsive but its acceptable. one good feature is the phone can make a little vibration when you touch the screen to confirm that the touch has been successful. i thought that was excellent. but with my phones, i always have them on silent and vibrate alert..thats just the way i roll. i soon found out that you cant put the LG on silent and have the touchscreen touch vibration on at the same time....THAT is how limited the software is.
also..u can use a stylus to write txts etc with handwriting recognition yet theres no notepad application to jot/scribble notes. theres no drawing application to make random drawings with the stylus. so thats silly! that woulda added fun to the phone.
also the web browser is poop. i excepted a worthy competition with the iPhone's browser but its just not the same. not as smooth, not as useful, not as fun.
i WISH someone would combine the LG hardware with SE quality software!! or better still, i wish SE would make a good iPhone/Viewty type touchscreen phone. i havent looked into the P1i but it doesnt seem to be on the same par really does it. |

K850 excels in phone functions. no other non-os phones can manage to beat that except the RAZR2's Linux Java and the Blackberry's Java. but still JP-8 has some advantages over them like the UI and useability. Viewty is good, and could be better in terms of hardware but as you said it the rest sucks. so to sum it up nothing is perfect. you have to invest on what's more important and you invested on K850 with it's powerful J2ME platform customization and battery, and sacrificed the abit better Build quality and better video camera. hope you'll enjoy your new SE for the rest of the time matey btw. mods for cam driver/acoustic, KD player/ menu and firmware for K850 is coming up very soon so keep your eye for it as you K850 still can do better than what you experience to it atm

I dont want to sound that i am slating the K850 all the time but from hardware and value for money point of view, viewty is just better period.
- Screen: Viewty 3 inch screen is about twice as big in viewing area as K850 very small 2.2in. So playing videos and other general use is much more enjoyable on Viewty.
- Camera: Viewty is as good (or even better) than K850 in still photo.
- Video: Viewty video recording at VGA 30fps just put the K850 QVGA 15-30fps to real shame.
- Price: Cheaper than K850
Just based on above 4 factors, I just cannot see how K850 is competitive.
Some smaller advantage of Viewty over K850:
- pdf viewer,
- office doc viewer
- DIVX video support.
- The web-browser also gets ok review. Even if K850 opera browsers work better but K850 small 2.2 in negates any advantage it has.
- native Google support

I just can't understand why some people just brush aside Viewty and say K850 is better without any valid evaluation. And I just cannot comprehend why the availability of hackers modded drivers for K850 is an advantage.

I didnt brush the Viewty aside. I liked the features on paper. thought they were great. So i got the Viewty. yeh i love the screen, the video recording, the divx playback was also fun. but it only takes up to 2gb of memory so cant really have many movies stored...which was a shame. as a camera and other functionality the Viewty beats the K850. as a practical phone the K850i beats it. has way more useful phone-like featuers than the Viewty. Viewty's media player wasnt very good either...nowhere near as good as the k850i media player.
it all came down to the fact that i didnt find the Viewty useful as a practical phone. used it extensively for 10 days before i gave it back. i got very used to the touchscreen typing (loved that), browsed the internet (not as good as i'd hoped) and played with teh camera (excellent for videos, not bad for stills). but the standard phone features, such as writing txts, finding phone contacts in the phonebook etc just wasnt as useful as the k850i.
i dunno..its my own opinion. i gave the Viewty a good shot and it lost. |

@deepy

Are you sure you confirmed it 100%? Dont look at spec sheet. Originally they say N95 can take max 2Gb only. But we know that is not true.
browsed the internet (not as good as i'd hoped)
Not as good as what? Iphone? K850 opera browser is not good either. With its small screen, I would say K850 lagged behind Viewty in web browsing.
as a practical phone the K850i beats it.
I agree with you here.

Does anybody know, if KU990 has program "trackID"? |

K850 and P1 and both joke of a phones in front of the LG Viewty. P1 has a terrible camera and K850 looks terrible with its awful keypad.
Just go for the viewty IMO. You get a phone with a huge screen, video recording that pisses all over the video recording on K850/P1, better camera than K850 and not to mention, nothing on the viewty will eventually peel off like it does on the K850(keypad).

I think the camera on the K850 is much better than the Viewty. The compression on the Viewty sometimes is a bit too much.
K850i and P1i is indeed not a joke in front of the Viewty.
Writing messages on the P1i is much easier than writing messages on the Viewty. Writing messages on the Viewty is kinda annoying sometimes since you can't just press on the screen lightly. You need to press it with a bit more force.
I am however, really impress with the Viewty's recording. It's really amazing.
I've only tried the P1i and the Viewty, and these are only my opinions only. |

The 'trackID' software is owned by Sony Ericsson, so I doubt the KU990 will have it, although it may have a similar piece of software although I cant confirm that as I've not used it.
You can get exactly the same results as trackID by dialing 2580 and letting the call connect then letting it hang itself up (it takes about 20 seconds). It then sends you a text message with the track info. This feature uses the same Gracenote database as trackID, the only downside being that it charges you for each time you use it. I think its called Shazzam. |
