What is the best PDA? |

Really depends on how you're planning to use it. My first ever PDA is an iPAQ. I don't want to call it a PDA cause it's really a pocket pc. There's only one thing I can complain about and thats battery life. I hope there's something they can do about it.
If you're going to use as a plain organizer and won't use it for multimedia, you can do with a Palm based PDA. |

This is less and less of an issue with the PalmOS 5 (Palm Tungsten, Sony NX70V etc.) and even with the older OS 4 devices such as Sony NR70V some devices have decent multimedia capabilities ... and then in some cases the same lousy battery times as PocketPC's.

Seriously the ease of use, speed you can get data in and searching for info in the built in series 5 apps. is far superior to the Pocket PC (IMO).
For example:
I store info regarding employees holidays in the Psion diary app. if I want to find how many holidays a person as booked I can search for his name within a defined date period. How do I do this in a PocketPC, there dosen't appear to be anyway to defined a date filter. The Series 5 has a great week view.
The two main things that let the Psion Revo (or 5mx) down is the sync. to a PC is sloooowwww. and with the Revo you can never trust the built in battery.
I have used many pda's some palm, all Psion and if your main use is for diary, contacts & notes I still think the Series5 is the best (or P800 but emulator version does not appear to have date filtering or catagorising of Tasks) .
I can honestly say I was Hugely disappointed with the built in PIM functions of the Pocket PC
Excel & Word equivalent in Revo also as full formatting and embeddding of pictures tables etc. And you have built in printing!! How do you even print direct from a PocketPC without additional software!
PocketPC - Greats - Audio/Video playback, jpg viewing, Avantgo & Internet, expandable memory, games (these are what stop me from selling the iPAQ, not the PIM stuff). |

MnM, I've only used Palm and iPaqs so my input may be a bit biased. If you want a small device with a decent screen and Bluetooth go with the Tungsten. I currently don't own one, but have played around with it at the store and have to tell that this is one amazing little device. The killer is the price. If size is not a real issue go with an iPaq 397x or the new 5450. These two models offer Bluetooth and the 5450 is also Wi-Fi capable. These iPaqs have incredible screens and are great for multimedia, games and allow you to trully multitask. iPaqs are not very cheap either. Keep in mind that no matter what you select (Palm or iPaq), you'll need to get 3rd party applications to realize the full potential of these devices.
I suggest you do lots of hands on/online research since there are so many new PDA's in the market today. You should visit Brighthand.com for your online research.

I think the Sony Clie strikes a good balance between the fancy multimedia stuff most PocketPC users used to slam PalmOS with, and simple straight forward functionailty. I have an NR70V (coming from the N760c) and it is just great. You can get a Bluetooth Memory Stick for it, although it is way over priced as a Bluetooth interface card.
IMO PalmOS 5 has enough multimedia functionalities and networking functionalities for the normal users. If you need to telnet into a VPN network to remote login to a UNIX server and yada yada, then you shouldn't even be looking at anything but PocketPC or the Sharp Linux PDAs. Otherwise, PalmOS is fine.
And the NX70V isn't that big. It feels very slim in person. Not much bigger then my NR70V. TT is real nice, but I hate the blue colour backlight. YMMV. |

i'm using a Psion Revo/Diamond Mako PDA right now, but i'm planning to get a Sony Clie soon. i know it would be a big change but i don't care. Sony clie matches well with my Sony Ericsson T68i
Tungsten is nice too! But I would rather get the new Dell Axim Pocket PC

I'm looking to get a PDA to go with my T68i. Somehow I love Psions. Is it possible to get a Bluetooth-Card for the MX5? If not, I will probably go for the Revo Plus.
Peace. |

Wait for the HP/Ipaq 5000 series. The 5450 sports embedded BT and WLAN. No expansions required.

My comments:
1) PalmOS downside is it's incapability of recognizing the most common file format worked on a desktop PC such as jpg, bmp. I can't transfer the captured pics in my T68i directly to my Palm as it only recognizes it's own format (pdb, prc etc). This makes me think twice about buying the Tungsten, although it is only great little piece of equipment.
2) Dell Axim, though cheap is frankly UGLY. I hope their designers can put in some taste to it.
btw, have anyone checkout the Fujitsu/Siemens LOOX? Wow, that PDA is cool + build in bluetooth.

Sony Clies come with software that reads JPG natively. Acrobat is available free, but you need to "optimize" files on computers first. That's the general situation with PalmOS. You can pretty much read any file, as long as you convert it first on a computer. Not as direct as a PocketPC, but at least a possible work around.
I played with the Dell Axim X5. It is a messy design. It felt every bit as clunky in my hand as it looks in pictures. I would rather go back to my old, big Apple Newton than to carry one of those. But I am very tempted in getting a Toshiba E330, or maybe if I can find an iPaq 3870 or 3970 for good price. |

mx5 only takes CF type 1 memory cards, nothing else. Also screen on 5mx series (MC218 inc.) was so crap that I changed to the lower spec Revo Plus because the screen is so good & size perfect.
Series 5 machines such as 5mx & Revo are really "dead" machines now with no further development. Great as a PIM but not a patch really compared to new Palms & Pocket PC's flexibility.
Just wish the Pocket PC had the same or better functionality as those built into the Revo/5mx.
