It's definitely not GSM interference. When you put the device in flight mode, the crackle disappears for a few seconds then returns (though slightly less severe).

The same when searching for networks and when a GPRS connection is sending/receiving.

What I'm wondering is whether this is a f/w or a hardware issue. I'm also wondering if w950i users have experienced the same issue, the phone being similar in many respects to the M600i, the users of which have reported the same problem.

I'm getting really frustrated with smartphones. No matter how beautiful a phone might be, there is always a devastating flaw.

N.B. The crackle in reference here is also not caused by keys pressed. It's constantly present even when MP is running on its own.

Yeah this crackling static is annoying, but to tell the truth i haven't noticed it until i unbranded my phone (had polish Orange branding) then again i haven't really listened to music before the unbranding. The noise is apparent in videos ,music and radio...Maybe its the player app itself? any good mp3 players for uiq3? would really be a shame about the phone i grew to love it.

EDIT:

Nope just installed LCG Jukebox and its the same, and the games "crackle" aswell

thank goodness, i thought it was just me. the static is incredibly obvious when listening to music. especially when the volume is low or the song is composed of soft and subtle sounds (classical music anyone?)

as this could potentially be a hardware/manufacturing issue i strongly recommend organizing all interested parties into one voice and having a mass communication with sonyericsson. i think its time us "first users" leverage our knowledge and experience into some kind of change/reform.

sorry, i have to reply to, instead of edit, my orignal post because i cant find the edit feature through my p990 browser.

just to clarify, i have experienced the static with the mediaplayer for both audio and video. i have also experienced the artificially low volume. both of these issues lead me to assess the p990 media features as failures. and, unfortunately for me, i bought this phone primarily for these features so i could avoid buying separate media player like the ipod. this is hugely disappointing. i intend on calling sonyericsson this weekend to inquire about their formal position on these issues. if they do not provide a solution i will need to figure out what to do next.

in addition to the failed mediaplayer i also experience choppy audio on a regular basis for phonecalls. this i have to investigate more but its not looking good right now. other than this, and the weak memory, i love this phone.

i cant believe im considering getting the iphone instead of dealing with this.

woe is me.

Alas, we are all in the same boat. Have you updated to the latest f/w? The crackle is a bit less annoying, but still there nonetheless.

But I'd say if you only require a multimedia phone, why burden yourself with the bulk of the p990? Perhaps a smaller walkman phone or the Nokia N91 might be a better choice for you.

As for me, there's something about the P990 I find irresistible

N.B. I'd be interested to see what SE tell you. People have attempted to complain about the issue, but SE's official position on this was: the crackle is too low to be considered abnormal. blech.

Hello! Anyone found the root of this issue, or resolved it? I have noticed that the crackling noise is apparent when the headphones are DIRECTLY connected to the p990, but when it is connected via the dock, there is nothing
