@cletus141 - Yes, I ultimately purchased the HCH-61. I discovered that it existed after my first post in this thread. The -60 would work also, of course, since it's more "universal."

@carkitter - I just thought of a potential problem! My factory sound system has a small amp-DSP unit inline between the speaker-outs (yes, the speaker-outs, not any sort of line-level out) and the speakers. Will this cause a problem with the HCA-60/HCE-26? It did when I used to have a Parrot handsfree kit. It connected the same way, a "Y" cable between the radio connectors and the speaker wiring to those connectors. The result was a ground loop noise when the phone was in use

Let me know if you think the same will happen, and if so, how to remedy it. All I can think to do is splice into the radio's ground for the HCA-60.

I have come across the ground loop problem before and like the 2 speaker issue there is an inexpensive gadget to deal with it. My old boss used to refer to them a 'chokes' dunno why, I knew them as ignition supressor's.

This example has RCA connectors but not all supressor's do.

Does the back of your Headunit look like this? Particulaly the 10 pin (unused) socket at the top?

I don't see a pic anywhere

But I did find one on my own - here are the connectors on the back of my stereo.

The 8 pins at the top connector are power, ground, etc., as well as the telephone mute pin. The 8 pins in the middle connector are the speaker outputs. The bottom is a 3-part connector. The one all the way to the left is for the factory CD player or changer. The one all the way to the right are IIRC line level outputs for an external amplifier. Most of the pins in the middle are for a much fancier instrument panel than I have in my car, one that repeats the radio display info. The one I currently use is a single wire, "REM-C," for the steering wheel controls. Note the "- TEL" and "+ TEL" pins, those take a speaker-level (yes, I'm sure) input for mono sound from a handsfree kit.

Time now for "Plan B" - retailer says his web site is out of date, and the HCA-60 is "unavailable" rather than "in stock"

I guess it's for the best. The HCA-60 + HCA-26 sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen, given its 2-speaker-only output + likely noise & volume issues in my setup. (A similar thing happened to this Land Rover owner.)

Why the phone can't simultaneously support the MMC-60 and handsfree is beyond me, as this would be a very nice setup to have in the car.

I'm close to giving up on this whole endeavor and going back to my iPod, while shopping for a non phone

Doh! I forgot the link.

Anyway, it doesn't quite match your diagram.

Good news! You can connect straight from the HCA-60 to to the Headunit without needing the HCE-26.

Just take the speaker that comes with the carkit and cut the cable at the speaker end. Plug the connector into the HCA-60 control box and attach suitable connectors to the +ve and -ve speaker wires at the other end.

Then plug the connectors into the terminals marked -TEL and +TEL and your done. Sound from your carkit will enter the Headunit and be played by the speakers.

I've done it before it does work.

Surprised the HCA-60 is unavailable. Is superceeding it already?

Just checked that Land Rover link; not struck that problem - not as many LR's in NZ as in the UK (thank God!) but it's hardly suprising LR would throw a spanner in the works considering how badly they've built cars for so long. They couldn't even re-engineer Honda's properly. It took BMW to sort them out, and BM's profits suffered as a result...
anyway enough waffle...

By connecting the speaker output to the TEL inputs you'll avoid any external amp problems.

One problem - that will only give me Mono sound, even when stereo music is playing from the phone

Otherwise, you are correct. The "TEL" +/- inputs want a speaker-level, not line-level, mono input for phone audio. This cause no problems for the factory amp.

I quoted the LR setup because it sounds like our American-market VWs with the "upgrade" sound system. I guess to save $$$ on wiring and connectors, the head unit connects to the amp-DSP unit via the same speaker (that is, speaker-level) outputs as non-upgraded-stereo cars. Which then causes a problem for any add-on kits that hijack the speakers with their own amplified connectors

BTW, I'm obviously missing some joke about Land Rover Very few of them here in the US, since they're considered luxury vehicles. We have too many of the cheaper variety of these automotive water buffalo, e.g. Ford Explorers and Chevrolet Suburbans.

I bought an MMC-60 and an AUX-in converter for my stock radio's CD changer port. I'll test this out with my Jabra SP500 speakerphone, the only handsfree "kit" I have right now. Let's see if the two play nice together. This thread tells me they won't, but an e-mail response from says otherwise. At least I'll get the music off the phone, in stereo, in all 4 speakers, with no ground loop, this way.

There are quite a few of them out for all makes and models from several manufacturers: PIE (VW's OEM supplier of iPod interfaces IIRC), PAC, USA-Spec, Blitzsafe, off the top of my head.

@hlc_twist

have you gotten this all figured out yet?

You have a VW, right? I'm contemplating the hook up between my w810 and my Audi.

As mentioned earlier, I have the hch-61? (w810 holder), but I still haven't figured out how I want to hook it up.

Options:
1. mmc-60 to a converter like the one you show in a photo earlier that allows me to use my CDchanger input
Pros: should sound awesome
Cons: cost of both pieces of hardware(converter is like 65 for my ride). No battery charge for my w810

2.mmr-60 plugged into the bottom of my hch-61.
Pros: i already have the mmr-6 and hch-61 (i used the mmr-60 on my w800 for my water-proof Sony boombox for floating the river: i turned it on mix and put it into 2 ZipLock bags)
Cons: sounds like crap on a nicer stereo, no charge for w810

3.This is the one I hope works. I found an Audi Tech article on audiworld that tells me how to splice into the CD changer input without additional hardware. Remove the USB end of a DCU-60 cable. splice the sound output into the CDchanger input and run the power wire from DCU-60 to a hot lead under my dash (probably requires some extra, inexpensive electronics to ensure correct voltage, etc. should be easy, I've already built a backup battery charger out of a 9volt battery and an Altoids tin).
Pros: play music, charge phone
Cons: not sure if it'll work

Curious to know how you're project turned out

thanks,'
