2ndly spot on m8, nokia do so well due to the major thing lacks - an establishes loyal cust base
how will overcome remains to be seen, because although they make undoubtedly the better phones, they do not strike the average punter as a better phone than nokias
average punters dont want their phones 2 do it all
is stuck in an almost niche market whichi it needs 2 get out of
i dont think comparing 2 nokia though is wrong as i interpret 's startegy as yeh taking market share but not by trying 2 replace or blow away nokia, by creating its own stable market to dominate
thats my 2 cents

Totally Correct
wont be a major player for some years
you cant expect them to be market leaders with one good product can you?

Guysssss... this thread makes good reading - some strong opinions too.
As someone previously mentioned, the p800 will not be a mass market phone. - majority of people wanting a small pocket phone packed with features. It would be interesting to know from a profit point of view if a basic phone sold in great numbers at a fairly low cost actually makes more profit than a high spec phone sold in much fewer numbers at a high price?
My guess is that would rely on more basic spec phones sold in big numbers for survival.

The P800 is all very well, and will be pitched against the (successful - hard though it is to believe) Nokia 7650.

Hard to believe?? All the people whom I've shown 7650 have absolutely fallen in love with it after they've used it a while... Easy to use and navigate - big colorful screen etc. The UI is really good, really it is . Maybe it is because most of those people have been Nokia owners and the UI logic is pretty close to the simpler phones as well.
P800 is not a mass market phone, touchscreens wont get "Joe Sixpack" to buy it. Two handed usage is a big no-no on non-techy market segment... It will most likely sell well on normal PDA user segment but that is much much smaller than the "Joe Sixpack" market. Just look at the PDA shipment figures from last quartal...

huh.... let's clasify something clear here.
Motorola - design and styllish
SE - Executive and Technology
Nokia - beginner need a phone.
Nokia become so well known is because they r easy to use for those people who want only a phone to make calls and received SMS.
to compare the warious group of phone. u guys have to fair. u can't compare japanese car with euro car.
T100- 300 series is same class with nokia 3 - 5 series
T68i series is same class with nokia 6-8 series
and for P800 they are they compatitor for nokia 9 series.
i believe most of the SE user here started with nokia. and i seldom see any ericsson use here shift to other phone unless financially difficulty to follow latest design from SE.
so there is a market for SE out there. and it's up to thier marketing stragety to push harder or not to overtake Nokia.
and read more news on the market. SE minimize thier loses this financial report. but for nokia, they begin thier loses now. and they keep pushing out lots of other model phone to take back the market.
now think.... why? because they know thier can no longer get the top seller if they don't improve. they gang with Sega for game. they try to come out phone with EMS, MMS. they know bluetooth is the future and they start to develop now. are they too late for it?? i am not sure. let the market tell u.
t68i is a great success for SE to fight again nokia. following the P800. will be another hit. nokia panic and simply release the 7650 which is not very good piece of machine. they r trying on the market. they hope they can win. but statistic shows that they failed. they come out with 6800, 7250, 7650i. ;p for so many series to actually fight again P800?? this shows they panic, really panic.
until here. nokia will not be no. for the next few year if they don't imporve. i strongly admire ericsson have the technology on tele-communication and sony have the design and marketing. they both can make a success if they can really understand each other culture

Someone earlier commented that p800 was needing 2 handed use....wrong, thats what the jog dial is for.In fact i dont know of a touch screen PDA that has`nt got a one handed way of menu surfing.

I was holding out for a p800 here in the Philippines, but I lost my r310 recently and had to get a new phone. So the p800 is out, the t68mc is in! (Sad I know, and it's not even an i! And I still have to get an upgrade...) Regardless, I think that SE will be around for a while... |
