Thanks for that.
I have updated my phone firmware as you suggested and I have also got hold of a brand new K750I (present for my wife).

the chip does not work on either of them - it still freezes the phone.

I have reformatted the chip using a card reader on my PC. this does not help. In doing this I have lost the data which I should possibly have backed up before formatting. Could this be the problem or have you better ideas?

thanks

Sorry, but I have only skimmed through this thread, but I was under the impression that the K750i/W800i etc only supports a max of 2gb.

I think Masseur said he's had a 4Gb mem stick working in a K750i, there's a thread on it somewhere but not sure where!

Silly question I know but could it just be the phone freezing while it reads the memory card when first inserted, or is it like that for more than a couple of minutes?

I didn't want to revive the thread or anything like that, but the reason why your memory stick pro duo is freezing your K750 forever is that the memory is formatted to another device.
For example, I got a W900, got 2 memories of 4 gb each one for my psp, I tried putting one into the W900 and it just froze, just like it did with yours.
I formatted the memory stick with the computer like a normal format (not quick), and inserted the memory into the W900, froze like 5-10 seconds (maybe a bit more) and now it worked fine. I noticed that the W900 had formatted the memory stick to its own features (Music, Videos, Etc.) just like the PSP did. Also I did a SEUS update thinking that was the problem but it wasn't.
So now we know just in case something happens like this to someone .

I've just got a 4GB card for my K750i from an ebay seller.

At first I thought it didn't work in my K750i, because it froze. So I copied the old contents of my 500 MB card onto it using a card reader and tried again. It froze again but I left it for a short while (30-60 sec) and it suddenly burst into life.

I don't think copying the files did it, I think I just wasn't patient first time.

Please note that the serial number below is in fact a counterfeit.
If you have bought a card with this serial number it is a fake.

Card is Sony PRO Duo 4GB (MSX-M4GST/X).
Phone is K750i.

I can tell you that this definitely works (and you don't need to update the firmware).

Hope this helps someone.

it does work with a 4gb mspd. the problem is that you have to wait a minute or so to get your phone working again.

Failing that, is it possibe to partition a 4Gb into 2 X 2Gb? Can the K750i see more than 1 drive?

Hey all,

I just registered to this forum to post the solution to the problem. It took me a number of hours to figure out and didn't manage to find any solution on the net. In the end trial and error prevailed.

It seems that sony/sandisk implement fat16 in a compatible but specific way or the stick's partition table's raw data is written slightly differently so that the phone will not work with anything unless it's exactly the way it would be when formatted using the phone format or "memory stick formatter" . I didn't spend enough time on it to actually figure out what the exact cause was but the phone (a K750i in this case too) just will not work with regular fat16/32 even if you set it up what seems like exactly the way they do it.

Solution: use the linux dd utility to make an exact image of another working memory stick pro duo card, size doesn't matter as long as it's smaller or the same size. dd the image back onto the stick that was causing the phone to freeze. Then insert the card you have just "re-imaged" into the phone and format the card. You'll find that the phone won't freeze anymore when you insert it. In this case the working stick I took an image of was a 128M. Once you format the "re-imaged" stick using the phone's format tool, you're back to the original size of the stick. (4GB's in my case too again)

Bit of a long route for something so elementary but at least you won't be dishing out money for a new stick when the one you have really works perfectly well. I'm baffled at how useless sony's format tool is for achieving this, you'd think it was something so simple, just makes it look like their format tool is purposefuly crippled to get people to go out and pay more cash for their product.

My K750i froze for like 20sec on my 2GB pro duo when I had it!

So, be patient maybe?

When does the phone software fix date back to? I've already upgraded the software on my phone about a month ago so I don't think that this is the issue.

Also note that it would seem that FAT16 (default file system used when you format your stick using the phone's format) is not capable of handling more that 2GB's of data so when you copy files from your pc through a memory card reader as soon as you hit 2048 MB's of data the file system allocation table will point back to block 0 and you will overwrite your partition table on the stick. You're then back to square one with a corrupt stick, see solution above to fix it.

I have not tried copying more that 2048 bytes using PC Suite though and will give that a shot next and see if the memory card also gets corrupted.

Actually I think you are on the wrong path. It's not true at all that the memory card needs a "special" format. You can format it in windows using ordinary fat32.

If you have formatted the card in fat16 you won't get anywhere. If you have formatted the card in windows using fat32, and you still have a problem, it sounds more like a problem with the card imho.

Many people have been using 4GB for ages without 20 second freezes or format problems.
