Does he have a normal digital camera?

If so get the w850i.

(I'm still anti using camera phones for proper pictures)
this was not posted from a w850i as I only get 1mb of free WAP/mo

actually there are lots of problems with the sliding mechanism in the w850, the joystick is the only main problem with the k800, once the joystick is cleaned regularly then there would be no problem. One problem i've seen with the k800 is the small keypads for texting, if ur father does lots of texting also this would be a problem. i would suggest go for the k800 but jus incase go for say... w810, that would be another great choice, forget the w850 since u say he likes to take out lots of pics, go for the k800 or w810

I agree with this. I still use a normal digital camera for taking pictures. If I had the k800, w810, k750 or any other decent 3/2mp with autofocus I would use the camera in the phone more though.

The N80 doesn't have AF (autofocus) though, so it's camera seriously sucks. Someone on a trip to Belgium a month or two ago had one, and my pictures on my v600i (1.3mp, non-AF aswell) came out better. Weird. Also, the k800i has a real xenon flash, rather than a single/dual led flash or none atall.

Just because he likes to take pictures doesn't mean he needs his phone to be capable of doing it.

I like to watch movies but it doesn't mean my phone is best for doing this.

is there much difference between the w800i and the w810?

he is planning to use his phone on the 3 mobile network to get access to the free live scores/football news etc.

so the phone should be available on the 3 mobile network. i know the w850i and the k800i are available on this network not sure about the w810i.

another walkman music phone is the LG U400. don't really know much about that phone though and i don't think it will be any better than the sony ericssons

well obviously is not, duh, but the camera on the w850 isn't 4 takin pics, the cam on the k800 is, if he only wanted to listen music the w850 would hav been the best choice but the best choice in his case would be the k800
or the w810
but not the w850 . tell if am not right?

well there aren't much of a difference between the w800 & w810, except for faster UI, brighter screen display, no STUPID joystick to mess round with, thats all i can think of at the moment, oh the w800 seems to have a louder external speaker

Yes, you are right about the w810i not being available on the hutch. '3' network. The reason behind this, is that the mobile is only EDGE compatible, not 3G - and they ONLY own their own 3G (UMTS) network but when your outside of this you can use O2 or Orange? can't remember...but it's changing at the end of this year is all i know.

You COULD buy a sim-free w810i, and a 3 sim pack. The reason your giving for being on the 3 network may be perfectly valid, but I thought that vodafone had a deal rather like this - football tables, scores etc. for free through their live! portal.

Basically, it's down to whether your dad likes carrying around an SLR camera that he's not really going to use the camera inside a k800i too much. If he carries around a cheap low-cost compact camera, he may benefit from the k800i. Basically, if he would rather use a standalone camera, go for the w850i as it has a better music player (mega-bass!) and it also has a d-pad rather than a joystick, so some problems may be gotten rid of there.

EDIT:-

as for the w800i / w810i debate, I'd go for the w810i - flash menus, faster phone, no joystick (d-pad). The only downside is that it doesn't have a lense cover.

yep just checked the 3 website and w810 isn't there.

many owners of the k800i are saying their joysticks aren't working properly and thats after a short period of time so i'm really put off by all these negative comments about the joystick. my w800i does it sometimes and its a little frustrating thats why i'm slightly put off by the k800i.

the w850i is winning so far but no doubt my mind will be changed again when i hear about problems this phone has.

It depends if you like the slider or candybar design better. Personally I would go for the K800i, even James Bond uses it.

well there has been progress. we have a book from the 3 mobile network shop in the house. i showed my dad my phone(w800i) earlier teasing him that he wants a phone like mine and he said no i don't i'd prefer one of these- he took the book and circled the ones he likes.

he circled the nokia 6280 which is a good phone as i used to own it but it is old.

the nokia n80 another good phone but theres just something about it i don't like.

the sony ericsson w850i & the w950i

i think the w950i would cost a fortune due to the 4gb memory so it looks like the w850i is the phone my mum will be getting him but not sure yet.

it isn't available on pay and go but i'm assuming if you bought a pay monthly one your pay and go sim card will work in it as on ebay there is alot of unwanted pay monthly upgraded phones(i bought one myself a while ago) and you can still use the pay and go sim card in them.

is the w850i the best walkman phone available at the moment?

thanks alot for all the help and views given so far
