battery life sufficient to do my everyday activities with, say, 25% in reserve for really exceptionally heavy days.
since I use my "phone" more for data than voice connectivity is a high priority. All phones have GPRS but if they have wifi and/or UMTS then I'm happy
next comes good internet ability including email capability which can be synchronised with my pc
given that the device has a good battery and good connectivity then a sizeable screen comes next so that I can view the data and web pages easily and with enough shown to provide good context that I don't need to struggle
expandable memory is a must these days for whatever content I feel I need at any time
finally comes call quality so that in noisy environments I dont have a hard time understanding the caller
