It does need some jiggling to get it in, just be careful you don't tear anything, you'll do it I'm sure

Out then back to half in again. It's getting late so I'm going to call it a day and I hope I'll have better luck tomorrow.

I white screen is better or worse than a grey one? I know, I know more work ahead, redoing everything.

Sounds like something's happened then, though of course it could be a problem with the connector on the phone itself, which would be a service centre job.
The only way I can think of to see if it's the screen or the phone itself is to get hold of another screen and try it in the phone.
In the meantime, it could be worth taking the phone apart again, and trying again with the connector. If it doesn't seem to go in, try waggling it from side to side gently whilst inserting it into the connector. Make sure the metal securing bar is as far open as it will go to ensure the ribbon goes in, and make sure it goes between the top of the connector and the black plastic part that slides in and out, it doesn't go below this (As I tried before!)

Don't worry about me finding where to put the ribbon in, I got that right. I think I maybe didn't push it in far enough. I have pretty big fingers so it isn't very easy. The ribbon was getting bent on the black plastic piece so I ended up using my sim card to keep the ribbon on a flat surface while pushing. The black piece is held on its sides with these metal pieces but it can wiggle on one side, that would be a potential fo a problem, right?

I'd just like to say thankyou to everyone that helped me out. I can offocially say the screen is dead and has to be replaced. I was suspecting that I had broken one of the traces on the ribbon, so I didn't have much hope but at least the screen turned white. I had to let my dad have a go, he thinks he can do everything better. He pulled out the ribbon and tried on his own, no less than three traces got severed during his attempt and now it is completely gone. Now I have to see if I can currently afford to replace the screen at the service centre.
