@optiplex,

there is a good sense and logic in what you say. I didn't think before, that the leading companies may hold on the progress, waiting for the market capabilities. But I guess there could be a good market now for phones with 7-8 Mp cameras, even at a price of let say $2.000 or more. Because I think it is worth to have a quality camera and a phone in a small and compact device, always in your small pocket. And customers, ready to pay for them.

It is definitely good to have a good camera in a phone. However I don’t think many people will pay $2000 for one. SE is not a niche market player; if we look at their product line we can see they have more low end/ midrange phones than high end expensive ones, so clearly they are targeting the low budget market. So I don’t think they would come up with a $2000 phone anytime soon.

Lets assume for a moment that SE makes a good phone camera; then I’m sure Nokia will release one of their own to compete in a matter of months or weeks making the competition even; so would SE or Nokia benefit from that ? I don’t think so. Because people who want phones will buy phones whether there are good cameras in them or not, and those who want only cameras will not buy a “Camera with a phone” because they would be expensive than normal Cameras. So at the end they won’t be doing any better than they did by selling low end camera phones.

Therefore putting out good cameras does not automatically mean good business for phone manufacturers; however they would certainly be doing us a big favor.

Anyway that is what I think.

@ Opti

I think SONY should/are keeping an eye on the sales of the N90, I believe the only thing selling that huge hunk a junk is the branding of the camera!(as pathetic as it may be)

So if people are forking out 400+ pounds for that phone, can easily make a phone 10x better than that of the N90 in the same price bracket!!

I think the markets are split, some would prefer a digi cams, where as others would prefer a phone + a digi, mostly i think coz of its convienience, everyone has their phones with them anytime, any place....

Yes, I agree that Sony should do better, I mean after all they do know how to make cameras so why not use some of that technology to make better phone cameras?. However unfortunately SE is not that concerned with the camera aspect as I see it. I mean Nokia at least has a 3MP camera coming up soon, but SE has not yet even announced a 3MP camera?? (correct me if I’m wrong)

As I said before I still don’t think phone camera quality is considered number one priority among consumers. An example is Sharp 903SH. Even though it has been out for a while (since Aug 2005), It is still not very popular despite the 3.2MP camera with 2x optical zoom and Auto focus. It also has a super large display and all the features of a high end non smart phone like MP3 playback, expandable memory, FM Radio , 3G , list goes on…

I dont think the sharp name is popular...

Samsung, nokia and se imo are the top 3 phone manufacturers atm so if one of these launch a higher spec cam it will instantly be welcomed in the market!!

I think is making a 3.2 mp cam for the K800... check the "se high end phones" thread in rumours....

It's pitty for the Sharp 903SH. I didn't know for existing such a phone with 3,2Mps and so many features.

Perhaps here is again a word for the brand name - Sharp is not Sony. I mean - if Sharp makes a phone camera with 4Mp it will haven't the same market success, as if Sony releases a phone camera with 2,5 - 3 Mps.

Perhaps I'm addicted to Sony brand and I'm not so objective, but for me Sony means proven and tested high technologies, high quality built construction, longlasting, risk-free. With one word - more expencive, but worth.

I also believe that from the release of the W800 with SONY "W" branding will be a very good competitor in the mobile markets!!

All SONY has to do now is add the CYBERSHOT name to a phone and SAMSUNG and nokia will be in a lot of trouble!!!

Yes, 786KBR

you are right! And to remove the name Ericsson I wonder why shuch a giant as Sony would co-operate with a small and previous unknown company and would share it's brand name??

Woah hold up guy... Ericsson plays just as bigger part a SONY does...
Ericsson is an asset to they work well together...

But to bring out confused consumers SONYs branding just adds that little bit extra...

Actualy it's the other way around:Ericsson is the big name here, while Sony was bringing in the money as they needed a bridge head in the mobile market. Get ur facts straight,it'll help u in the future. As for the CZ lenses,it's a marketing gimmick!

I believe sony actually own "carl zeiss" now anyway ...

But the main factors in the lack of quality in phone cameras is the CCD/CMOS and the len size rather than the quality...

A phonecam lens is so small and the CCD/CMOS is similarly small that makes fitting a CZ lens insignificant...

Nokia phone uses them and pics aren't brilliant..

Its down to the electronics/processing and size to let light in rather than overall quality.

Doesn't really matter too much

@optiplex: does have a 3.2MP phone out, just not for your market...

@roumen68: "small and previous unknown company" are you being sarcastic or ironic here? If not then wtf??? \\o/

Who do you think makes the stations and provides the equipment for/to the networks?

Who do you think makes the hw and sw platforms for most of the mobile phone manufacturers?

@S4k1s,

Sorry, I see you are from Sweden. Maybe Ericsson was a quite popular company there before the joint with Sony, but I really didn't heard it's name before.
