Wow, an entire thread for just 1 question.

I know of 4 practical reasons 2 of which were mentioned already.

1. It's easy to cover & uncover it - you don't have to position it properly.
2. The cover will not fall into the hole because the diameter of the cover is always larger than the diameter of the hole in any orientation.
3. The circular shape is more efficient as it gives a larger opening for a given area compared to other shapes.
4. Round shaped covers are easier to move around by simply rolling it.

1 more thing.
round sheped lid is more resistant to torsion force than tri/quadrangular.
