yup, i believe its the fone cos it amplifies headphones less than that of a portable cd player, try it urself, just use one hdfone and the same song and test it with either a k750 or w800 and then try the hfone using a portable cd player, set it both at max.. you'll notice that the k7/w8 has less than that of a proable cd players max volume.. btw? jarrring problem? i dont see why u guys dont have a point of reference.. those of u testing the earphones for jarring/clipping should have only 1 song as a point of reference..

4 the 1st time i bought k7, there was no jarring problem at all and im usually listening to mp3 house music almost at full vol all the time. And than i lost the phone, i bought another one, but right now im experience jarring problem at 1 bar b4 max vol using 2 same headphone. I guess it's a software probs, other than that the media player is not stable too, still a lot of bug. My firmware is r1j, anybody experience the same thing?

All,
I have a W800i and with the stock HPM-70 headset/headphones, it doesn't clip/distort at full volume. However, if you try and use the Mega Bass EQ option, anything greater than 80%-90% volume will indeed cause it to clip.
I decided to go ahead and swap the stock HPM-70 headphones for a set of Sony MDA-EX71SL's and there is indeed a difference. The EX71's have much better bass response than the HPM-70's do and they resist the clipping much better. I think that the HPM-70's sound crisper at lower volumes (especially when using the Mega Bass EQ setting), but the EX71's are better sounding at louder volumes. Since the EX71's already have a lot of Bass built into them, I've taken to not using the Mega Bass setting with them and instead I've set up a customized EQ setting (BTW, I really wish that the phone would remember your customized EQ settings).
I've heard folks mention that the HPM-70's are equivalent to the MDA-EX71's, but they're definitely not (they're probably more along the lines of the EX51's). I personally like the EX71's better than the stock HPM-70 headphones as I generally like a bit more base in my music. They also fit quite a lot better in my ears than the stock HPM-70's do. Also, I really hate the silly boom that comes on the stock HPM-70 headset as it is always causing the earbuds to be yanked out of my ears. However, the really great thing about the stock HPM-70 headset is that you can always swap the headphones and use your favorite set instead. |

Has anyone here stopped for a moment to realize that you are complaining about the sound quality coming from a phone? YES phone. It is not an .mp3 player but has one built in, so this is not its primary function. If you want great sound, then buy an iPod or Diskman or some other device that is design for this purpose but to continue moaning on and on about the sound coming from your phone is completely childish. If there was a problem with the sound coming from the phone, then you would have something to complain about.

@sapporobaby that argument doesn't hold weight here. This phone is Walkman branded, and as such it is expected to be a music player. Indeed it is being marketed as a music player because its factory headset allows you to swap any headphones you want unlike any other phone, and it has a flight mode that makes your phone into a dedicated music player.
To argue that this is just a phone is irrelevant because until now all phones have claimed to be phones with MP3 support, but now we are dealing with a phone that claims to be a Walkman, so it should act like a Walkman.

Point well taken but I am quite sure SE had no intention of putting high quality components in a phone that it puts in a music player. It is a compromise device. Does a bit of this, and a bit of that but nothing extremely well.

My W800i sounds as good as my iPod does. Plus it can do many other things that the iPod can't dream of doing (like being used as a phone, etc.). I doubt that I'll ever use my iPod again as there's no need for me to carry two devices around any more. |

Yes, it sure does... The portion of the headset where the 3.5 mm jack is also doubles as a mic for the hands free (thus, no matter what headphones you plug into the 3.5 mm jack, they'll still work as a handsfree headset). It has a button on it that can be used to answer and hang up calls when they come in. It's very slick! |

When the HPM-70 are being used, whereabouts does the mic hang?
Is it near your chin or chest? |

The mic is about a metres length away from the Fast Port connector (i.e. where it plugs into the phone). However, it has a really nice little movable clip on the cord that allows you to position it at any location/distance from your chin. It's a very well thought out little headset. |
