S60 touch looks horrible. If that's how the new UIQ's gonna look like then beh. Hope SE would make a software shell.

Ditto: ihmo Nokia's UI designers should be replaced by SE the S60 Touch UI looks functional, but it lacks some lackluster aesthethics that SE UI can offer If only they would make the unified platform's User interface look like an android or A200+capuchin...

I think you misread the news announcement. Nokia is NOT the main owner and beneficiary of the new foundation. The news article clearly states that Nokia is purchasing the rest of Symbian and DONATING IT to the foundation. Therefore, all of Symbian will belong to each of the members of the foundation and not to any specific company.

The point of the foundation is to create an open source Symbian with a GUI that will take the best features of each and combine them into one. Therefore, I don't believe the interface will be ugly like nokia's. If you read the article, basically everyone is GIVING their secrets and what they own to the foundation for the benefit of all.

THAT is why it is great news. EVERYONE will benefit, not just one company, and not just one company will control. It is a collective effort that will result in a platform, OS and GUI that will revolutionize the smartphone world for years and years.

UIQ is not dead. I will happily purchase a UIQ phone now even knowing this new information. What does it really matter? So what? Many of you were happy to purchase a UIQ 3.3 phone, knowing fully well that there is a good chance the next iteration (UIQ 4 maybe) would likely come out a year later (at least this was what we all though until now..)

So, for all you who are "disappointed" and "angry". Maybe try reading the press release again and take it for what it REALLY says instead of superimposing your own words/thoughts into the text.

UIQ 3.3 already has the best features of Symbian 9. If Nokia is really sincere with her intentions, she could have suggested UIQ 4 as the new Symbian OS.

Question:
Would SE do the same for UIQ? With the cancellation of Beibei and Paris, one would think that their next Symbian-based phone would come out two years from now. Would that be correct?

Just because one project is in devolopment, does not mean that another one can't be in another stage in development. Typically a phone takes about 2 years to develop, from conception to production. This means that the C905 was being dreamed up and developed while the K800i was announced. Wierd, huh? Makes you wonder what's in their notebooks right now.

Let me ask a question then to the people that are disappointed by this news...............

How would you have reacted if SE had not been a part of this Unified Symbian platform? If this announcement had happened with the rest of the companies getting together on this project without SE involved, what would you have felt for the future of SE and UIQ?

Some more news about UIQ. According to an article in a swedish newspaper the company has known about the changes for about a month.

200 people, of 325, will probably have to leave the company before 2009. 125 is needed to give support to existing UIQ customers for the rest of 2009.

In swedish:

I don't think there will be a UIQ4, and my guess is that there won't be any more smartphones with UIQ from SE. Why bother with an UI that is a dead end?

Very interesting times ahead. More WM-phones, anyone?

I see no problem if SE will continue their current UIQ line. It can exist together with the new unified OS. This is not the first time SE handles multiple OSes I guess.

That's the easiest solution I can see.

The reason why SE bought UIQ in the first place was to get control over the company since it failed to deliver what they wanted in time. The delay of the previous P-series phones was very much UIQ-related.
IMHO SE don't want to develop an OS, they want to design the phones, the applications and services.
In an interview from yesterday SE representatives spoke about how to focus on applications and services on the phone, and not the OS (will try to find a link).
You don't continue an OS development by sacking most of the staff.

X1 vs Touch Pro ... opinions?

Definitely Touch Pro for a number of reasons. The most important being SE's lack of experience with WM. But I would still choose a Symbian version of X1 over any WM device, I could happily get along with it for 2-3 years.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

Yeah, it's an idealistic vision. I'd be happy of that, but it just doesn't go this way really.
And maybe will lead to a new solutions, there's actually no choice if they want to stay on the market anyway.
But please, be serious...... So Nokia buys THE REST of Symbian to help poor SE and Moto? NO!!! To benefit, it's a market and sales, not a gentleman's club.
Of course they have to donate, other way the whole foundation is nonsense.
It can give something positive in two, three years - why not?
But now is now, and I'm the customer.. And SE will not bring it.
UiQ FIRES people, as stated above. It's a fact. Why - because of develpement? No, it's because it's just over. And as was written somwhere else, symbian workers will become Nokia workers.
It's clear - UiQ is over.
Besides, it's clear - Motorola lost a lot of time and money with the alliance with UiQ, and it gave them nothing really - Z8 and Z10 did not make it.
Also remember, SE is loosing money now, so they have to CUT costs, not enlarge it. That foundation is a way to do that. New UiQ device will not be soon, and they also want to make it cheap.
Also, cancellation of the two devices they worked on, means massive change of plans.
So, I'm sure it does not look so nice and bright.
P.S. The things I'm saying are not just my thoughts, they're facts...

All this is really a bit Off Topic. We now have two threads thrashing out the implications of yesterday's announcement.

Nokia buys Symbian! (Mobile leaders to unify the Symbian software platform)

I don't know what's got into everybody lately. Since yesterdays announcement some members seems to be at each others throats.

Can we get back on track?
