Wouldn't they at least put AF and a flash for a difference?

Dont be surprised if Win Mobile is the platform of choice from now on.

Possibly. But Symbian+UIQ (touch screen) was the reason why I was going along with SE. Nokia have announced that the new platform will be backwards compatible with S60, no such luck for UIQ.
If I decide to go WM way, there are a number of companies with plenty of experience with WM.
Now, why would I choose a SE smartphone for the next 2-3 years? It seems like a lost cause. SE will be the big looser here unless they very quickly take steps to reassure people that they are here to stay in the game.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

I believe there a presentation by Sony Ericsson a while ago with one of the slides having a diagram that said Sony Ericsson will be exploring into different operating system for their phones including Windows Mobile and S60.

Anyway I think the biggest loser of this Symbian merger is Motorola. After purchasing shares of UIQ just recently, now they are giving it away? Hmm...

I have faith in se. They will undoubtedly suprise us all in the end. I've always been a sony fan through good times and bad. Naturally i will quick with se until there is official and consistent proof that they are not the company i have grown to love

If Paris came out now the way it was, just with a better CPU, I think I would probably still buy it. It still had most of the specs alot of us are looking for. Until Symbian Foundation actually is seen on the market and isnt just all talk, we may aswell leave aside our ideal specs. That said, I have a feeling foundation will bring us something that is very very close to what we're looking for.

Ya know...

After reading the news article on the website, it doesn't seem as bad as everyone in the past few pages has been hinting at.

First of all, the announcement is essentially a merger between SE and other companies to create an open source Symbian. Undoubtedly this is to compete with Android and the other open source mobile platform (i can't think of the name) that is out there.

I don't see this as the death of UIQ. Not at the least bit. It will still be Symbian and the UI will most likely be very similar to UIQ. The article specifically says that SE and Moto will be contributing their UIQ research and dev to the foundation. Therefore, it is not death of UIQ. At the worst, it will receive a new name, but I think UIQ will remain.

Reading that article, I don't see the death of anything, but the opening up of trade secrets, patents, and r&d notes to create a platform that will maximize innovation, features and experience for the user.

I see it as a good thing, and it does not, and should not imo, discourage me from purchasing a UIQ device between now and when the Symbian foundation phone will be released. Living in the states, it is rare for me to even get support for my SE phone, as i can't even get updates from the update service anyway!

IMHO, i see this as a step forward and for the benefit of us all.

sorry ive been away, and it looks like theres been some information these past 5 days that ive been MIA, well not MIA but completely taken with the TouchPro from HTC (if an american version with QuadBand HSM and TriBand HSDPA at the quoted 7.2 ever appear, ill be outta this backwards thinking hell hole ... which is eerily like the proposed flagship for 2010 and pretty much the X1 with better lines and bigger battery)

i think this announcement is HUGE! this is GREAT news, especially for highend phones the market has just been busted wide open. Android will have numerous partners but Symbian is already the leading OS on smartphones, with Nokia leading the pack. So its safe to assume that the unification can only bring the software package in line with the other OS' such as android. some of you are looking at this like day 2, or day 3. they have YEARS of research and knowledge and penetration over android, look how long it took for us to see SE advertise for a UIQ developer for a CS phone till we got capuchin ... a year. How long did it take from announcement to fruition with the C905 1 or 2 months, trust me moves were being made before you heard about it, when the FIRST android products are supposed to hit Q4, and coincidently 2 unannounced UIQ devices get panned ... a week before such a heavy announcement.

were in for something pretty sweet if you ask me. and im the pessimist.

X1 vs Touch Pro ... opinions?

It's simple - HTC.
Don't trust SE anymore. I'm not going to invest again into unclear and stupid company. Just look - all the bad rumours became real. It can't be worse.

But what is great news? That Nokia will be the main owner and beneficient of all of it.?
Or maybe the fact that you will wait a year to buy a new UiQ device?
Or maybe the fact that SE is leaving UiQ in an polite way?

Fact:
The first products that would run on the new Unified Symbian Platform would start surfacing on 2010.

Inference:
Considering S60 is Nokia's bread and butter (which S40 is as well), they would not stop introductions of solutions running on the same platform until 2010 despite its imminent doom (or at least, re-naming). But of course Nokia can afford to do that since the new Symbian would be founded mainly on S60.

Question:
Would SE do the same for UIQ? With the cancellation of Beibei and Paris, one would think that their next Symbian-based phone would come out two years from now. Would that be correct?

On a personal note:
S60 touch looks horrible. If that's how the new UIQ's gonna look like then beh. Hope SE would make a software shell.
