I think SE are good at taking thier UIQ phones too far down one particular path. For instance the P800 was great, as was the P900, the P910 was more of the same, then the P990 was one too many.

The M600 is getting old now and the P1i has similar styling but higher spec. I'm glad SE aren't going to go down the dead-end path which the P5 and G702 were taking them in terms of styling and functionality.

Perhaps this will leave room for SE to develop an 'iPhone killer'?

Exactly my point! Its a different category, one which according to this thread may capture 9% of the Japanese market and is of much interest around the world. Its a category Apple has all to itself ATM and I for one think SE should be in there too.

If you talk about marketing and sales - yes.
If we talk about the product strategy - NO.
I would never like to have such a bull without balls (iPhone). This product lacks so many things and is intended for fashion mainly.
I want a fully featured smartphone, not something with great promises and many disappointments.
Pseries should stay as profi tool, which will never be a really mass-market device.
BUT if you talk about SE generally, I totally agree.

To be honest I don't care if the TM506 is released - Its for the American market only - But I think it will be released. There's no reason for it not to be. Just because SE cancels two or three phones doesn't mean they're going to cancel all their current phones in development!

TM506 I think it's Z780 just made for T-Mobile and we can check the phone name: TM- T-Mobile, like V serie made for Vodafone

No they are two different phones for sure. They may look very similar, but they are two different phones.

I respectfully and totally disagree from my own viewpoint. Walkman phones and such toys could be extremely good sellers but mean nothing to me, I would never have a shake feature on my least of requirements for a device.
I guess we will all have to modify our list on what is available to us but for me the starting specs of my smart phone would be around 3" touch screen, preferably a qwerty keyboard and reliable service options. (In all fairness, ever since my T39m days, at times it may take long but SE was able to either fix or replace my device without too much hassle).
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

Yeah, just look at their keypads. They are different. Not the same phone.

This will upset a few people but I'll say it anyway...

This from the first post in the Xperia X1 thread:
"“Our vision for the XPERIA™ X1 is to deliver a seamless blend of mobile Web communication and multimedia entertainment within a distinctive design,” said Rikko Sakaguchi, Head of Portfolio and Propositions, Sony Ericsson. “XPERIA™ is our promise to think foremost of user experience and to deliver the premium experience – anytime, anywhere, anything, with anyone.”

Sony Ericsson XPERIATM X1 – energised communication, the premium experience.

* Convergence of multimedia entertainment and mobile Web communication..."

That sounds to me like the concept behind the Apple iPhone - Communication, Multimedia, and above all, User experience. Therefore SE are thinking in the same direction as Apple with this new sub-brand. That does not mean that I think the X1 is like the iPhone, its not. But why can't SE produce a touchscreen phone with a focus on internet browsing, email, sequential txt, GPS, Walkman 3.0 and add the stuff the iPhone needs like Video recording, MMS and A2DP. A snapshot camera would be fine as this would not be a feature phone. This would fit into the Xperia brand well because the User experience would be the #1 focus as it is with the iPhone. The market would not be IT consultants and phone forum dwellers but people who are after a networking tool to keep in touch not only via voice and text, but via email, facebook/bebo and face to face via GPS. Probably women like my wife for instance.

Well, to put it all into some sort of perspective, what do we mean when we say 'Iphone killer'? My interpretation would be 'something thats better or preferable to the apple iphone'. But how so?

If we talk specs, P990 is already an iphone killer. N95 definately is.

If we talk about screens arguably X1 or HTC Touch Diamond may be preferable (not on paper, but which one really is nicer to look at in real life).

If we talk about aesthetics, SE have been thrashing apple all the way. To me SE usually have a fantastic range of designs complementing the nature of the product itself. To me, the iphone is far underdesigned to be a smartphone. I appreciate the design without buttons but to me, as a phone it is not nice to look at. Switch the screen off and the whole phone turns a beige colour lol!

So I think what people really mean when they say 'iphone killer' is that they want whatever specs they want from their device, but they want a pretty UI also with focus on 'ease of use' ( I wouldnt rate the iphone highly for useability myself, but anyway).

But this all comes down to my point- just because people say they want an 'iphone killer' doesnt mean they want it to look or seem exactly like one.
Like the above example with the X1. Ive seen it many times before, you could give 2, 5, 10, 20, 100 different companies the same specification of a product and a description of what you want it to be like, tell them to go away and design it, and by and large, they will all come back with something different. So it will be interesting to see how the other companies on the market react to this and make their own iterations of this device.

The problem with the iphone is that it is so unique, it has polarised a large number of people into belonging to a whole new market with very different expectations from a handset. Since manufacturers are all in competition, the others have no choice but to try and tap into that portion of the market in some way. Now this is where copying comes in. And when it does, you tend to see which companies are really innovative and which are just one big flop *cough cough n*kia tube cough*.

I suppose SE have taken their own direction, as they always do. They have learned a few little lessons from seeing the iphone, and have used a bit of that knowledge to tap into a different market. That market is the windows mobile market. If that isnt marketing genius, I dont know what is. Just when everyone releasing alike devices is being called and 'branded' as iclones, SE find a bigger and stronger new market to attract and strengthen and the X1 is evidence of stunning progress.

But anyway, we want to see what comes along with UIQ, for now. We can see lessons learnt from the iphones touch UI, but SE have been more careful to tiptoe around too much likeness, and have done it in their own style, so like a great singer, they have taken someone elses work and made it their own. We just wait for more evidence of great progress in the UIQ area now. G900 came, it was pretty good. The next to come should therefore be excellent (I suppose this where people had their gripes with Paris and Beibei- to me as a person wanting to buy a phone, I liked Paris very much- but clearly not everyone shared the same opinion).

Well I'm not sure people will be picking up the X1 in one hand, the iPhone in the other and thinking which one will I go for? There will be a major difference in price for a start. I think SE need to leave out a few features to allow a PAYG "iPhone Killer" to compete on price. It could run on WM or UIQ or A200 for all I care. It would just have to be priced below the X1 like the M600 sits below the P1i. I think SE could do a better iPhone than Apple, lets just hope Nokia don't do it first.

@Xell
It's ok, I'm just throwing about some ideas I've been thinking of, not spoiling for a fight!
