Like everyone else I have a lightly branded (just startup screen logo) Voda
which came with firmware:
Phone: R5A006
Bluetooth: R4F01
Organiser: R3A04
It doesn't find any updates, although we know from these forums that unbranded phones can get R7A001.
I phoned Vodafone. It took a long, long time to find someone who knew what I was talking about - 'firmware? phone ware? what?' - but I got there in the end. The lady I was speaking to was going to and fro with some technical dept.
I was told that they do have newer software - she wouldn't confirm the version - as 'we're getting new stock every day which all have newest software on' but that they currently don't have a way to distribute this new firmware to existing customers.
It didn't sound like they were expecting a distribution method to appear shortly, otherwise she'd have fobbed me off with 'keep checking, it'll appear in the next couple of weeks'.
Instead, she offered to send me a replacement handset. I pointed out that I only received my P990 this week, but she was determined that all new stock has newer software on it and that it would be better.
So I wait for Monday with baited breath.
I highly suspect I'll land up with exactly the same as I've got now.
My fear is that I'll get something that is heavier-Vodafone-branded than the light branding I have now. But if this comes with a higher organiser version then I suspect that when (eventually) they put some updates online then these will increase the branding too.
As to be expected I have to box-up and hand my existing P990 to the courier so I won't be able to check which version the new one is before deciding which one to keep.
She also said, earlier on in the call, that installing the standard SE firmware would void my warranty. This suggests that its possible to do this, but she wasn't going to tell me and noone on these forums has been able to do it.

Amen,
Although I'm happy to wait a week or two and let everybody else figure out teething problems a new FW brings. |

Do other voda users really need new update? My p990i works fine, a bit slow though. And the sound quality should be better. |

I'd like the latest certainly as it sounds a nice step forward. |

I've just got off the phone with Voda Handset Tech Dept on when they plan on releasing the fecking thing to us and apparently, the email that contains the details on updated software for the P990 was sent with an anonymous address - WTF?!
Anyway, he couldn't get in touch with the people approving the software, but told me that they approved the R7 back in late September, while the R5 was in late August.
Can anyone discern what the likely interim time is then from official release to Voda release? I've had enough with playing the waiting game.....

So, I am planning on ordering my P990i tommorow from Voda. Do you know if it will come with the fast and stable updated firmware or if I will need to update it?

Almost likely, without a shred of doubt, just as the moon follows the sun and that the sky is above, you will get the current Voda approved version neccesitating an update to the recent R9 thereafter.
Now, join the club....

I have an O2 SIM in a Voda P990i and it works fine, just getting some of the usual bugs that every P990i user has.
Only annoying branding is he splash screens and the hard coded voda internet account settings.
When the P900 was up-specced to become the P910, why can't we have a stable up-specced P910 called the P920 without this terrible symbian version? |

It really annoys the hell out of me that we still can't get this firmware as voda users. |
